I have been following the events surrounding this fire, currently the 4th largest in AZ history.

latest update

Officials are already comparing this to the rodeo-chediski fire of 2002. Currently AZ's largest forest fire having burned over 400K acres.

My mother had been up at our cabin in Nutrioso AZ for almost a week when she decided the leave on Wednesday and return to Tucson. The rest of our neighbors were evacuated by sheriffs on Thursday night. Most of the people in our area own vacation homes and have places to go but there are many people there and in Alpine, where some buildings have burned, that have no where but shelters to go to.

more evacuations are expected

So far this fire is ZERO percent contained.

I drove from Bisbee to Sierra Vista today and the haze was mega-thick. Totally obscured mountains I saw clearly when I made the same drive yesterday.

Current updates. It looks as though the properties in Alpine and Nutrioso are safe for now. They are back burning and the fire isn't spreading as fast as it was. Still about 6 miles from Greer. Some neighbors broke through evacuation line to deliver 2000 cookies to the fire fighters!

If you go to this website and use the map to zoom into the very northern most finger of the fire just to the left and down from the upper most 191 marker you will be in my valley.

The fire line has crossed the ridge and according to reports already burned some homes closest to the ridge. My Cabin is right next the lake you see there. Fingers are crossed but we have heard a rumor that they pulled the fire fighters out do to danger from the smoke.

This really sucks.

Stay safe man. Those are some incredible pictures.

(Just an FYI, it's easier to use Photobucket, that way, you can put the pictures right here in the thread. )

The fire is making it hard to breathe where I live, over 100 miles east of the Arizona border.

I heard on the radio this morning that it is causing elevated levels of unburned hydrocarbons in Minnesota.:eye-poppi

Ditto here, even farther away. The entire Rio Grande valley is filled with a thick haze of smoke, and my eyes are burning up here in Los Alamos.

It's not bad at the moment. For whatever reason, the smoke and ash gets worse at night when the temperature drops. I have to wonder what the Rio Grande Gorge around Taos looks like right now. It's probably filled with soot.

I'm going to try and run my swamp cooler for as long and as high as possible today then shut the house up at about 5. Hopefully that will keep my house from getting uncomfortably hot and not allow much smoke to get in.

It's a major bummer for me, as I like to keep my windows open at night this time of year and can't do it because of that fire.

Thanks for the tip!

I am more than safe down in Tucson. The cabin is a vacation home for my family. We haven't had any updates from the area but based on new fire lines it looks some neighbors lost their homes.

A whole bunch of new images.

Sobering images. All the smoke is blowing northeast. Blue skies on this part of the Mogollon right now.

Someone just started at least 8 fires in the Flagstaff area. Evacuations already underway in the Doney Park area east of town.

Already getting calls. We might have a house full of refugees shortly.

... All the smoke is blowing northeast...

Yes, and right into my face, apparently.

Worse today... eyes burning more...

I went to a talk at the Lab today, and the guy couldn't speak because the smoke was ####ing with his allergies.

But at least I'm not on fire.

According to a report this morning the town of Greer has been compromised and all of springerville and Eager are to be evacuated. Nutrioso and Alpine are holding on.

I'm sorry. Good luck.
