Ah, it's time to start the speculation on the VP race. I was inspired by C. Christie putting out the green light to W. "M." Romney that he's ready to be asked.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1211/70793.html

The idea here is to list the VP Maybes even though the GOP nominee is yet to be determined.

GOP
C. Christie
T. Pawlenty
R. Perry
M. Bachmann
J. Huntsman
R. Santorum
M. Huckabee
M. Pence
P. Ryan
B. Jindal

Dem
J. Biden (inc)
H. Clinton

Biden will absolutely be Obama's running mate this year. I do think it's possible he steps down afterward and someone else is appointed. I could see Andrew Cuomo, perhaps, but I haven't really thought about it too much.

Does anyone know if a VP has to go through Senate confirmation?

ETA: Oh, and I think Romney will really have to pick a Teabagger. I don't think Christie will do, even though he'd probably be a good choice for some Republicans. The Teabaggers just hate Willard and I don't see them coming out unless he has "one of them" on the ticket.

The Vice President is elected, not appointed/confirmed.

However, if the Vice Presidency becomes empty, the President appoints a new one, who must be confirmed by a majority of both houses of Congress. See: US Constitution, Am XXV, Sec 2. This has only happened once: when Jerry Ford became VP.

Heh, yeah. See, Newt's just passed his sell-by date. But if you really want him, I'll add him to the next update.

I don't want any of them, but if Santorum can make a list, it seems that Newt is not a stretch. My personal unlisted fav would be Palin. I would love a repeat of 2008.

Condoleezza Rice.

"America’s first black female secretary of state is quietly positioning herself to be the top choice of the eventual Republican presidential nominee, ready to deliver bona fide foreign-policy credentials lacking among the candidates. The 56-year-old has recently raised her profile, releasing her memoir in November and embarking on a monthlong book tour.

After 2 1/2 years as a professor at Stanford, Miss Rice is reportedly getting “antsy” to get back into the political game. “She’s ready to go,” said one top source."

"...Her addition to the ticket, which wouldn’t come until late next summer, would dramatically change the dynamics of the 2012 election. As a black woman - her family has roots in the Deep South stretching back to before Civil War era, and worked as sharecroppers after emancipation - she would mute Democrats’ charges of racism among conservatives, especially tea party members. And her sex would likely prompt moderate women to take a serious look at the Republican ticket."

Every choice there is terrible on both sides. I really should just seize power of this dump and end the madness.

funny thing is Newt is too much a Douche to be electable, but the Fundies wont deal with Romney who is the best of a bad bunch.

Is there anyone in existence you'd like to recommend? I'm going to submit this list, with the forum's recommendations and comments, to the W. "M." Romney (or ???) campaign. This will hopefully head off a catastrophipick like an S. Palin or an R. "D." Cheney.

For the Republicans, no, Romney is probably bets of the bunch and thats not saying much....

Only decent Republican in recent times; Jodey Rell of Connecticut

I think that Marco Rubio and Nikki Haley should be high on the list of possible picks. For the republican side of course.

ETA: Marco Rubio currently has the most support at Intrade. He's sort of a two-fer: The Tea Party loves him and he's Latino. And he's from an important swing state, so I guess that makes him a three-fer.

There was an interesting thread back in July 2008 in which posters here tried to predict who would be the Democratic and Republican VP selections.

The suggested format was for people to list their top 5 guesses, in order, for who the choice would be for each party. Most people here had either Palin in their Republican list or Biden in their Democratic list, but few people had both. No one had Biden as their top pick and only one person had Palin as their top pick.

So, I've added new names, and also introduced a symbols to represent recommendations and down-ratings for the nominee for good and bad picks. Posters, keep recommending picks, even ones already listed, and I'll accumulate the arrows.

I saw John Bolton on TV the other day (some fool left it turned on and tuned to the wrong channel) eagerly endorsing Rubio.

Take your iodine pill before you shake hands with that moron now.

Glad to see my only post was quoting someone betting their life that it would be Biden.

Here's my predictions for 2012.

Republican:
1: Rubio
2: Christie
3: Huckabee
4: Ryan
5: Zombie Reagan.

Democrat:
1:Biden
