Threats forcing voters to polls, Zimbabweans say

Two names remain on the ballot in Zimbabwe's presidential election: President Robert Mugabe and leader Morgan Tsvangirai. But the latter has withdrawn his name, and his supporters say they aren't allowed to just not vote. A Human Rights Watch researcher said people are being threatened with violence if they do not vote for Mugabe. "...A vote today is a protection -- it keeps me out of trouble," voter Lameck Caesar said. full story

No kidding - this election soap opera is even funnier than the US one...

1. This is the wrong forum for this. Not really related to the US elections.
2. There is nothing I find funny here
3. Is Mugabe Caucasian, Oliver?

Americans will not help the people in Zimbabwe because there is no oil. Robert Mugabe is acting like Saddam Hussein. George W. Bush and Gordon Brown love freedom and democracy still they don"t do nothing to stop Mugabe? I guess people were right. The "war on terror" is a fraud. Mugabe must be stoped.

Of course he isn't Caucasian, that's why the West will do nothing about Blacks oppressing/killing Blacks ... with precisely predictable Caucasian historic accuracy. And while the US elections are less violent, they certainly are an entertaining soap opera as well.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't Oliver?

I dont see why everyone expects the US to get involved. It has done nothing to cause this issue, it historically has no real sphere of influence in the area. So what (Aside from potentially upsetting people) Is the US to do

The Commonwealth of nations have been wringing their hands for years over this guy - rather than ban cricket tours and take back knighthoods, maybe it is time to start getting a bit more proactive

It's impressive how you can take something about... any country in the world, really, and make it into a criticism of the US.

ETA: Tell me Oliver, if the US was to intervene, how long would it be before you were here posting about the evils of the invasion? Ten seconds, 15 tops?

This is not necessarily the impression that I get. The US, Britain, the UN, and Europe seem to be vocal in putting pressure on Mugabe. The real pressure that isn't there is from Zimbabwe's neighbors.

Mugabe needs to be stopped, but what do you suggest beyond economic sanctions? Iraq, Part II? This isn't merely a problem that US can fix by itself. Perhaps the better thing to do is arrest Mugabe and put him on international trial for human rights violations.

I am no supporter of our current administration, but I think it is too easy to blame Bush for something that is beyond the scope of a single foreign policy action. African governments have a culture of corruption that the entire world needs to protest, not just the US.

Actually nope. But "damn you" if you say you're going to fight extremism, Dictators, Evildoers and in the name of Democracy - while "you" actually won't if there is no advantage for Car Drivers or Jewish Lobbyists back home.

Never mind, today is my monthly sarcastic day.

I actually thanked some Americans in here for freeing Germany from it's Dictator. And Mugabe is a whole different level in terms of urgency and especially factual accuracy in contrast to the Iraq disaster.

What makes it more urgent? The US will be involved in US interests first. That's the way it should be. Maybe you should call the UN or your own government? What's Germany doing these days? Do you even know?

So you're ok with the US being world police now? How about Germany intervening instead of the US?

Nope, the US will first care about Israels interests, and then maybe consider to repair broken bridges. As far I remember, Germany is also supporting the pretty stupid Embargo-Idea. And what a fun we Caucasians had the last time we put an other major embargo on a Dictatorstate:

1. Hundred thousands of Child-Deaths due to missing medical supplies
2. Destroying a Nations Infrastructure/Economy
3. Let millions of People suffer from those circumstances

Yes, that's the right thing to do...

If those people couldn't get rid of Mugabe themselves, they certainly deserve to suffer. [/sarcasm]

More Urgent:

Well, what -in the near future- do you expect will happen next down there?

Now if we could just get a monthly "Oliver Makes Sense Day..."

Hell, even a yearly one would be an improvement.

You're not going to win the off-topic comment of the year award anyway - so why not addressing the topic once in a while if you (a.) fail to find any criticism and (b) won't agree with me - no matter what. :p
