I say we cede Florida to them and be done with it. At least it would take the geezer factor out of the election this year.

Well, it depends.

If the US DOES send troops, "A Unique Person" & the gang will rant and rave at "another act of evil American imperialism", which, surely, is based on a secret desire to get control of Haiti's rih oil reserves (just like those evil invasions of France and Bosnia, surely to get control of Sarajevo's oil-rich deposits and Paris' good food).

If the US DOES NOT send troops, "A Unique Person" & the gang will rant and rave at the US's "ignoring its duties" and having "no consideration for the rights of colored people" who desire its protection from injustice (just like those Kurds and political prisoners in Iraq, dying in droves because of US indifference to Saddam Hussein's crimes).

Remember, Tmy: whatever the US does is wrong. That's the starting position. All that remains is to fill in the details.

Fifty U.S. Marines were headed to Haiti on Monday to protect the American Embassy and diplomats after rebels overran Haiti's second-largest city and began detaining supporters of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

Western diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Marines were requested after rebels threatened to attack the capital, Port-au-Prince, soon.

Weren't we the ones that screwed up Haiti in the first place?

Or was it screwed up and we did a half-job of trying to fix it?

I'm fuzzy on this one.

We helped reinstall a psycho, as I recall, who had been in exile outside of Haiti for years. At the time, I remember quotes attributed to Aristide regarding his high regard for particular forms of sadistic torture and execution.

I'm not entirely clear on why we did it, but I sure expected it to last longer than it did. All I know is that the place was pacified when we left, so I'm reckoning it's Aristide's mess... but our fault for trusting him with Haiti in the first place.

I guess I have missed all the protests when our troops were in Haiti nor do I recall anyone calling Clinton a murderer or calling for our troops to come home. Weird how a presidency changes people's opinion of things.

Don't forget the protests of an "illegal war" because the UN did not authorize it.

I like it. Skeptic, could you post the appropriate message for me, depending on what happens? You could become my personal assistant if you like.

There were many more differences between Haiti and Iraq than just who was president; and so I must reject your assumption that only the political affiliation of the presidency mattered.

Democrats are not immune to protests while making war--think of LBJ.

On the other hand, I can also see where someone's opinion might sway with the presidency, without them being a hypocrite.

Presumably, one often holds a political affiliation because they have a higher regard for leaders in that party. If someone protests "Republican" wars and not "Democrat" wars, or vice versa, it could be because of how much they trust the president--and that is not hypocrisy necessarily.
