I read somewhere that the United States is responsible for giving more in international aid than any other country. Is this true? I haven't turned up anything concrete to verify this.

Yes, it's true. The more useful statistic, however, is aid as a percentage of GNP, where the US far from outstanding.

If you only count government-supplied aid, the US is dismal.

If you add in private giving, the US moves up to 'mediocre, but respectable.
