This might be science fiction, but why don't we place tracking chips (or something) in the bodies of contractors so, in the event of a kidnapping, they can be located.

Not necessarily for the express purpose of saving their lives, but for finding the apes that do these kind of things--help detail the network that these people go through before they end up n two pieces on Al Jazeera(sp?).

Is this science fiction?

Mmm, would it help any? Perhaps if we took a juggernaut approach and immidiately attacked the hideout. That would certainly cramp the style of kidnappers. OTOH, it would surely get the hostages killed.

Obviously, however, if trackers were used, the kidnappers would make sure to remove them before they took the hostages to the hideout, unless they were implantable chips. And implantable chips that can be traced over any useful (in this context) distance are indeed science-fiction.

I feared that it might be science fiction.

Anyway, in my mind, the final destination of the victims weren't as important as the network they go through to get there.

The hostages are being beheaded.

A helicopter could carry the necessary equipment and run a pattern over the landscape to pick up a tracker signal.

I am sorry in advance for this, but I seriously thought you were starting a joke thread about how you hire a contractor and then you don't see them for several weeks.

Some of them survive.

Implantable chips have a range of a few dozen feet. Iraq is the size of Texas or so. Terrorists have missiles and guns. So much for helicopters.
