The actual headline is "Melbourne men accused of setting fire to Shia Mosque celebrated and showed off to their wives, court told", but if I'd used that most people would have assumed they were Whites rather than the Sunni Muslims.

A Melbourne jury has been told three men facing terrorism charges over the burning down of a Shia mosque in Melbourne's northern suburbs in December 2016 returned to the centre several times the day after the fire to "rejoice".

Ahmed Mohamed, Abdullah Chaarani and Hatim Moukhaiber have pleaded not guilty to engaging in a terrorist attack.

In the early hours of December 11, 2016 the Imam Ali Islamic Centre in Fawkner was set on fire, causing $1.5 million in damage.

They are accused of trying to intimidate the centre's members, who are Shia Muslims.

Most Islamist terror is targeted against other Muslims.

True, but I've encountered a few people who believe that there is no such thing as Shia or Sunni Islam, only the 'Muslim Race' and that as one of the 'Peoples of Color' for what you are describing is impossible, either the attacks were carried out by members of the 'White Race' and the evidence faked or the attackers genes were tainted by 'White Blood'.

It's a fascinating reworking of 19th Century racial pseudoscience, but one that makes dealing with racial issues that much harder. It's like the believers in 'lost Giants' views on the humanity of those with rhesus negative blood, a way of dehumanizing a group.

I wonder if anyone will claim this was internalized Islamophobia.

The men allegedly exchanged text messages via the encrypted messaging application WhatsApp.

"Shias are not Muslims. Shias do not represent Islam. Shias are the enemy," the messages allegedly said.

Mr Chaarani allegedly wrote "may Allah's curse befall the oppressors," making specific reference to Shiites.

Mr Mohamed is alleged to have written "followers of Shiism is stupid and arrogant", and only "donkeys and monkeys follow this".

Typical. Not much different from different sects of Christianity who consider other Christian sects to not be "True Christians". In centuries past they might even have burned their churches. Now they are (mostly) a bit more enlightened and ecumenical. Nevertheless, many still consider only their own particular version of Christianity to be the "true" one.

They should do the civilized thing and run their heretics out to a remote part of the country. Australia could call it "New Utah".

It's not exactly news that Sunni and Shia Muslims often come into conflict, for one or more reasons, even-though they are both Muslim (even-though extremist Sunnis would refuse to acknowledge Shia as being Muslim).

As a general phenomena it's not uncommon for people who belong to different religious groups that are in the same "family" view each-other with more hostility than they do people from different religious traditions. Basically speaking, when all other things are considered, heretics are far worse than heathens.

Islam is a religion, not a race. There are white Muslims.

I know that, you know that. But the people I was referring to believe that if you are white than you cannot be a Muslim and if are a Muslim you cannot be white. No more than there are any Black Jews, because all Jews owned slaves...

If you were to show those people this page of Wikipedia they would run off to their 'safe place' to recover from the damage to their minds.

This Danish guy's not a Muslim anymore, but he used to be:

To try and drag this back on topic, here is the defense statements.

Well that lawyers certainly has an uphill climb. Given the overwhelming evidence, there doesn't appear to be any real doubt about who committed the arson. The best the lawyer can hope for is to downplay any terroristic and religious targeting element of the crime, which surely carry some sort of sentence enhancer. Based on the reporting, I'd say chances of the defense being successful are pretty low, but they gotta try.

With the ISIS graffiti and text logs of the men disparaging Shia Islam and a infatuation with ISIS style fanaticism, I'd say these guys are well and truly screwed.
