In response to the overwhelming demand (i.e., Kimpatsu suggested it and me and Voob and Delivering Vito are in the region), I announce the First Ever Assembly of Skeptics in Tokyo (FEAST).

Sometime in June or July, depending on availability and Kimpatsu's move to Kawasaki.

Confirmed so far is me, living in Wakou and working in Shinjuku.

Other potential FEASTers:

Voob from Mito (Ibaraki)

Kimpatsu (Kawasaki, eventually)

Delivering Vito (Tokyo, I think)

Feel Free to confirm your attenance if you've been liste, announec your presence if you haven't and discuss times and places!

Edited to make you wonder what I changed. :)

It's now been confirmed that I shall be moving to Kawasaki on the 24th of this month. As I also reach the grand old age of 40 in two weeks' time, I suggest the last week of June or the first week of July.

Excellent.

I will be finishing work on the 15th of July and will be out of town for a week or two after that.

So late June/early July is good for me.

Possibilities (all Saturdays): June 26, July 3, July 10

More of a feeding thing or a drinking thing or both?

Oh crud. I just noticed the typo in the thread title. And the edit didn't work.

One can hope that any kind moderators reading this might be able to add the necessary r. :w2:

Shall we have lunch? Then we can proceed to drink all afternoon.
As I'm moving on the 24th, June 26 might be a bit too soon--I'll still be unpacking boxes. Consequently, July would be better for me, but what do other people think? And how about Sunday: July 4 (which means gaijin bars will probably be doing Independence Day specials), or July 11?

Ideally, a Sunday in the daytime would be best for me, it doesn't really matter what month. Although if it's late July, I'll probably be hanging around here for the matsuris.

Yeah, drinking all afternoon sounds good.

Sunday it is, then. If we make it Independence Day, as I said, the gaijin bars will probably half special promotions like cut-price beers. The next question, therefore, is obviously, which venue? Any favourites?

Call me a country mouse, but I'm afraid of Tokyo gaijin bars. Couldn't we go to a mahjong parlour instead?:D
No, really, how about an izakaya, and then maybe some karaoke?

(don't panic--I was kidding about the karaoke---jesus...)

Izakaya don't open at lunchtime, and nor do they serve the nectar of the gods (Guinness). There are gaijin bars in both Shinjuku and Roppongi, however, that do good lunches and serve the nectar...

Yup. I'm in the Chiba/Tokyo area. I was gonna mention the same thing in the other thread, but I thought we were all more spread out.

As soon as I get over this nasty hangover that I have right now, I'll be able to think of a good time for me. Right now, using my brain hurts far too much.

How ironic that I discovered this thread while taking a break from my nihongo vocab cards.

Alas: St. Louis MO might as well be at the opposite end of the planet.

PS Mah Jongg players are hard to come by here, too.

My brain hurts all the time. I think it's rusty.
:p

OK. I'm feeling a bit better now. That was the nastiest hangover in a long time.

Looks like Za Tokyo Tamu is shaping up here. Who is going to be our guest speaker? :D

Anyone got a place in mind?

:w2:

I wish I could be there to meet y'all.

Especially my long lost brother, Loon. :D

I'll speak; I don't mind. :D
Is July 4th OK for everyone?
And, do you prefer Shinjuku, Roppongi, or Shibuya?
PS: It looks like we'll have to keep Vito off the sauce...

It doesn't really matter to me.

There's a Japanese/Irish pub near Shinjuku station (something "...Dublin" I think) That has Guinness as well as some pretty good original stuff--ale, beer, whatever.
Just a thought.

The Dubliners. It's in the Lion Building, across from the East Central Exit from Shinjuku JR station. The barman's an Aussie canned Iain.
Alternatively, there's the Hobgoblin in Roppongi. (Better food than the Dubliners.)
Take your pick.

I'm betting the fourth will be really crowded. But if that's the case, I'm in favor of the Hobgoblin in Roppongi. There's more space and they have more types of libations. The food is better than at Dubliners, though it was once even better. Of course, this is all assuming that there's not some sort of big rugby or cricket or soccer game going on. If so, the Hobgoblin will be utterly uninhabitable.

Edited to add: Hello to Wyvern and bignickel. We'll down a couple of pints for you while we're at it.

Given that the 4th is the US celebration of its upstart insurrection against his Royal Majesty King George III, both the Dubliners and the Hobgoblin will preobably be crowded. If the weather's good, however, we can at least sit outside the Hobgoblin, so I vote for Roppongi, unless there's a massive vote in favour of Shinjuku...
