The White House dared to have a Halloween party

I will thank the Colbert Report for bringing this to my attention.

Apparently Obama threw a nice Halloween party with children of military parents serving overseas as guests. And this was recently touched on in new book. Johnny Depp was at the party and they had themed glasses to drink non-alcoholic punch from.

Limbaugh, Hannity and several others from Fox News are decrying this as the worst case of decadence gone mad since Caligula's lake boat.

Some pics of the party.

Their case is such:

  1. Apparently it's wrong to have a have this party with unemployment at 9%
  2. It demonstrates how "out of touch" the Obama's are
  3. They tried to hide the party
    1. This "coverup" was done by inviting the press corp to cover it
    2. Also they posted pics of it to the White House Flickr account
    3. Also they hosted a video of the party on the White House web site
  4. Limbaugh states that if the people were kept in the dark about this party then what else do we not know about?

When the First Family hosts the Koch roaches and their kind to a lavish White House party, the Rushblob will have something to snivel about.

But hosting the families of staffers and military people?

Gotta be some low-down son of a grinch to shriek about that.

There might be an issue if an unprecedented sum of money from public funds was spent on it. I can actually picture the people listed as having helped stage the event pro bono.

Much ado about diddly, I think.

These are the same people that:

  • Cried foul when Obama wanted to tape an address to students
  • Made a huge hissy fit over a trip to India
  • Said inviting an antiviolence hip hop artist to the White House was somehow endorsing ghetto gangs

I'm going to hazard a guess that, if the White House had made a big deal out of it, they would have been accused of using the military kids as a photo op for political purposes.

Just a guess.

I heard that Obama allows people to use actual toilets in the White House! Wasting water, polluting our planet, spending taxpayor money on literal crap! Under Obama's administration, people are encouraged to remove their clothing in the White House!! IMPEACH!!!!!

So, has anybody else been trying to find out what Bsh the Lesser did for Halloween 2008? Might be interesting to contrast te festivities. I haven't found any referrences yet.

I would honestly be surprised if the White House didn't have a party with invited kids every year.

To be fair, they're probably nervous about all Muslims sending out taped addresses.

*nonchalant whistling smiley thing*

Add to that: freaked out over Asian lunch menu served on Pearl Harbor Day at Obama's children's school.

Remember, this from the people who were fine with the previous administration distributing fake "news reports" so the media would better be able to present their POV.

Oh and remember when they blew up over the unhealthy food at their Superbowl party? Saying Michelle had no right to offer advice on healthy eating to kids since, on that one day, they had some greasy fatty food.

If there was nothing wrong with it, why did they keep it secret?

“White House officials were so nervous about how a splashy, Hollywood-esque party would look to jobless Americans — or their representatives in Congress, who would soon vote on health care — that the event was not discussed publicly and Burton’s and Depp’s contributions went unacknowledged,” the book says.

However, the White House made certain that more humble Halloween festivities earlier that day — for thousands of Washington-area schoolkids — were well reported by the press corps.

As always, it's not the crime that gets you, it's the coverup.

AFAIK, the White House Egg Roll is still an annual event.

Maybe they've taken a Jack Chick-like abhorrence to any kind of Halloween celebration?

Wait a second. . .inviting the press corps is somehow keeping it secret or a coverup?

Low key doesn't mean coverup. The facts just don't line up with this strange CT. The facts given in this NY Post article don't line up with the claims made in the book it also quotes (or the headline). How do you simultaneously make this a "secret" party and make sure it's well covered by the press corps?

Cognitive dissonance?

If there was nothing wrong with it, why did they keep it secret?

Maybe because they didn't?

The day before it happened, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced "the President and First Lady and the Vice President and Dr. Biden will host a Halloween reception for military families and children of White House and White House residence staff", the newspaper The Tennessean mentioned that Johnny Depp was there in an article about another, local, performer who also was at the reception for military families that was published at the time, pictures of the President enjoying himself at the reception for military families were posted at the time on the official White House Flickr feed, and a Johnny Depp fansite posted about Johnny Depp being at that reception for military families at the time.

The only reason it's a big deal now is that the right is taking advantage of a claim in a tell-all book that was just published, even though they could have found all the details they wanted right at the time it happened.

This isn't a cover up, it's an attack based on their own laziness.
