The vision thing

I didn't much like George H. W. Bush (the current president's father). But there is one thing he said that I absolutely agree with.

I don't like "the vision thing", either.

I want a president, not a messiah!

You are assuming that 'vision' is akin to some new age fantasy of dancing with dolphins. It was the 'vision thing', in a more down to earth sense, that gave us the internet and www.

I'm assuming no such thing. I know we disagree politically on many important things, but such is not the case here.

I must correct you on a matter of fact, not just disagree on issues.

You just plain don't understand USA politics. Both "left" and "right" blather on about "vision" and try to be the messiah.

There is a messianic quality to presidential campaigns in this country, not the property of any one political party.

Disparaging "the vision thing" lost GHWB the election of 1992 to Clinton. Otherwise he was doing OK.

But GHWB x41 was right about this, even if totally wrong about everything else.

Messiah is more than just dancing with dolphins.

W is running for messiah, and he ain't no new ager.

"Vision," to me, means an attainable, practical, far-reaching plan to implement an agenda. I don't see it as particularly messianic, but then I see the term abused a lot too.

One can have all the integrity in the world, but without vision the only one who will care is your mother.

Ahem, except that the economy was tanking.

What's the vision thing in US political terms then?

Generally, it's an extension of ideals based on ideology alone, usually without any practical or realistic means to achieve them. It short, a collection of platitudes.

Things like:

"I envision a world where no one goes hungry."
"I dream of a time when all thrid graders can read at grade level."
"A world free of tyranny and poverty, where the brotherhood of man is united in love."

Things no one disagrees with, but no one knows how to accomplish. You see a lot of it on both sides these days.

....and that he was a complete weenie. It just made his "vision" seem all the sillier. And that's coming from a Republican.

There´s a nice quote by a German politician from the 80´s - can´t remember who it was, though:

"Anybody who has visions should go see an eye doctor." :D

An uncommonly sensible German!

I am a patriotic American, but I have no "vision for America" besides being left alone.

Primarily that means being left alone by the gummint, though whipping bad guys around the world may be a necessary precondition.

War may be a grim necessity.

Utopia is a goal for insane people.
