Barghouti: 'The Third Intifada has already begun'

Middle East Eye said:
The Palestinian Authority must cease all security cooperation with Israel and support the upsurge of Palestinian "people's resistance" in Jerusalem and the West Bank in what is now being described by some as the "Third Intifada," independent Palestinian MP Mustafa Barghouti has told Middle East Eye.

Speaking to MEE, Barghouti said the Third Intifada "has already begun," following deadly clashes and protests in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem over the past few weeks, including the fatal shooting of two Palestinian teenagers in recent days and the killing of several Israelis by Palestinians.

The recent violence erupted after Palestinians clashed with Israeli security forces last month in the al-Aqsa compound, Islam’s third holiest site, that is also holy to Jews who call it the Temple Mount. Tensions had begun to mount following an increase in Jewish visitors during the Jewish New Year with relations already fraught due to ongoing settler violence and fears over the status quo at al-Aqsa.

Barghouti's comments follow Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's threat at the UN General Assembly last week to withdraw from all agreements signed between the PA and Israel over the past two decades. [...]

When asked what he expected from the international community, Barghouthi told MEE; "I expect the international community to take punitive action against Israel in the form of international sanctions. They need to make it clear to the Israelis that they must immediately cease their violence."

The Second Intifada started in 2000 when former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon entered the al-Aqsa compound, provoking almost five years of continuous violence and causing thousands of casualties on both sides.

Exactly what the Middle East needs right now. Will "the West"'s favorite apartheid state be able to use the opportunity of everybody being distracted by the events in Syria for a little "mowing", like they did last year when they started their slaughter in Gaza around the hour MH17 came down in Ukraine?

You just posted a quote from Palestinian sources calling for an escalation in hostilities, and you're claiming that it's the Israelis who are going to use world events as cover for their own conflict? You basically disproved your own thesis. If the conflict escalates, it will be because the Palestinians chose to do so, just as Barghouti is asking them to.

Smart move there, CE.

Seeking causes for escalations in Israel/Palestine is a bit of a fool's errand, with antecedent outrages always available for each side to claim the other "started" the latest escalation

I prefer to go more meta: with no occupation there would be no reason for an intifada now would there?

Even if there are calls from Barghouti to escalate now - why is he doing that? What pressures are being felt by the populace to make this time ripe for a new Intifada?

It won't happen because Barghouti said so - by the time he says anything on the subject the context will have arisen from forces far beyond his direct control that make his comments something someone in authority in the PA would say.

Frustrating how reductionist and simplistic these debates become...

Perhaps useful geniuses are not CE's target audience.

Good try. No points. And I am neither Jewish not Israeli. Just someone who carefully read the rules of warfare - in several versions. Especially the part about who is the war criminal when troops/military/hide in civilian areas and fight from civilian areas (a war crime on their part by the way). Oddly, the reason (part of) that is an actual war crime is that the opposition (say Israelis) are not required by RoW to not attack if the other side is operating illegally that way.

The 'hiding in civilian areas' becomes very tired when the population has been herded into a tiny area. Gaza has an area comparable to the Isle of Wight and a population density near to London's!

Well...let us hope that the call for a Third Intifada is just empty rhetoric, because the Palestinians don't need to get smacked down yet again.

These Palestinians....they just never learn and they obviously are not students of history. I mean, if these guys had been reading some history about Ghandi, Solidarity, the Vietnamese, the ANC, the PIRA, Hezbollah or some other orgs that can actually take on and win against giants, then they wouldn't be making head-on suicide runs against the IDF. Until the Pals realize that 98% of the fight is brains and not firepower, then they are going to always be on the losing end.

Of course there would be. Israel would still exist.

There's a reason that the Palestinians haven't been able to let go of their claimed right of return.

If back in 1965 Palestinians decided to follow the example of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, they would have had their state by about 1985. Instead, they tried to fight. Fools. And Barghouti is still that kind of fool.

Or his followers are, anyway. I am sure Barghouti himself makes a nice living and won't be in any firing line.

Arafat made billions off the misery he created. Yes, Barghouti is undoubtedly doing quite nicely for himself.

Bwahahaha! The only reason there's an occupation is that the Arabs decided to drive the Jews into the sea, and miscalculated badly. Merely being Jews unwilling to submit to Islam is all the reason they need for an intifada.

They actually had their state in 1947, but decided they wanted the Jewish state too.

You mean UN troops to observe the atrocities?

No...the same UN Troops that Israel trusts to keep an eye on Hezbollah. Ziggurat says that Israel can not achieve peace by ending the occupation....but they have done it before.
