The Secular Therapist Project

I ran across this website on Facebook.

https://www.seculartherapy.org/index.php

The website seems to be trying to get a database of therapists willing or skilled in helping people in separating from religious or cult indoctrination, and matching them up with individuals seeking help. I don't know how long this project has been around or how effective it is. Seems like a great idea. Since therapists from Liberty University can put the same initials after their name it could be hazardous to just randomly pick a provider.

I live in a major metropolitan area and no one in my local skeptics group knows about local therapists and a few therapists I've talked to also don't know about therapists specializing in this.

Maybe I ought to talk to my therapist about this. ;)

Or maybe my bartender? Or my barber?

But really, the only psychologist I talk to is a non-practicing Jew. I don't think he is much into religions. This will give us something to discuss. I mean besides me hating my mother. ;) I talk to him once every month- at the shotgun range. Then we have pizza and beer.

He has counseled some of the former choir boys. I don't think secular therapists are too rare. But sorting one out of the crowd could be.

I guess the onus is on the one seeking therapy to establish the approach of the therapist. A friend of mine was in therapy and after several sessions he was advised to insist that his wife have sex with him because it is his "God given right."

Often though people are coerced into therapeutic situations by court order or involuntary holds.

Although the secular therapy project seems to be for any therapy, I was thinking more specifically about therapy to recover from cults or fundamentalism. There was a previous thread on that subject:
