I know we've had quite a bit of fun with the sovereign citizen/freeman on the land conspiracy mythology here. I have to admit I've been enjoying another (but much more serious) side of this flavor of woo from an American group that is so out of this world I think it deserves its own thread. Since the FOTL woo pertains by in large to UK and Canada (via kooks like Rob Menard), and given that I suspect this group will eventually be raided by the FBI and make the news again in the USA, I wanted to start a new thread.
I present to you: the Republic of the united States (note the capitalization!). This is a group of people who claim that they have "re-inhabited" the "real" united States (again, thats united, not United) that was abandoned when we all secretly became a corporation about 100 years ago. You might recall this group because in April of 2010 they sent out notices to governors in all 50 states that they were to step down as the new republic was in charge or else. Of course their deadline passed and nothing happened...but the people who believe in this seem to not remember that.
The leader of the movement is Timothy Turner, a sovereign citizen guru and scam artist that has been in the patriot mythology woo sector for about 15 years. The group - and best I can tell this group ranges in size up to about 300 people - "elected" Mr. Turner as the new President of the republic. They have also "elected" various congressmen and senators. They held a meeting in September of 2010 and declared it the "Third Continental Congress" in a Utah warehouse where they set out their founding documents...all based on redemption/patriot mythology.
Other claims they've made include:
- They are now recognized by the Hague (which I don't understand...the Hague is a criminal court...) and the United Nations. And 20 other countries. No proof, of course.
- That there is just billions and billions of gold bullion (not that worthless fiat money) that Timothy Turner has been promised that will fund the new Republic. The problem is that every month we hear the Corporation of the United States keeps stealing the funding (how timely!).
- They are now issuing sovereign "identification" cards that they claim means you cant be stopped by a police officer. All this can be yours for a few hundred dollars!
- Once they get their "de jure" courts in place, you will be free of all your debts (mortgages, credit cards, etc.).
- That the "de facto" (their term for the real and only US government) will collapse any day now and that they will be in charge.
- That the FBI and Homeland Security are in their meetings and on their side.
- They are setting up a "ranger" program to act like a police force. This is probably where they are on the line legally speaking - its ok to have a fake police force and the fake police force can probably even solve disputes between people who believe the Republic is real. But when they try to enforce sovereign woo on someone who operates in reality, thats where the legal problems will start.
About the only real thing from this group is that its probably true that the FBI is monitoring their meetings. However, the FBI hasn't acted yet because its legal to be crazy - if someone wants to believe that they are a sovereign citizen under this fake Republic, its legal to do so until they try something like getting out of a debt with patriot woo or usurping real government authority.
It seems this group appeals to people who are having economic problems because it promises that the Republic will offer them "remedy" and wipe away all their debts, since all debts are illegal anyways (in patriot mythology).
The Republic's website with weekly conference calls: http://www.republicoftheunitedstates.org/ I strongly recommend if you want a laugh to listen to the weekly conference calls. This is high quality entertainment. I'm trying to figure out how long Tim Turner and the other leaders can lead the flock along until they demand some of that non-existent gold bullion.
