Merged The Perry meltdown

It would be sad if that's the end of it. It's a bad thing that he couldn't remember, but who hasn't gone blank or had trouble remembering the name of something?

Yes. Would the Elephants want to put up a candidate against Obama who might, in the heat of a presidential debate, forget what his basic principles are? Nope.

I think something is the operative word.

I haven't seen the video, but it seems like such a minor thing to make such a fuss about. Was the real damage a lack of grace under pressure?

More distressing to me is that he wants to kill the department of education and to a lesser extent ...um.

Hold on.

What was it?

...er.

Oops.

Oh, wait. "energy". That was it.

It has happened to me. But usually when I'm wasted. Or if it's something I'm not really familiar with or haven't thought about in a long time.

It doesn't inspire confidence that he wants to eliminate a department but doesn't know the first thing about what it is.

Hey, what does this thing do? I don't know. Let's get rid of it. Government is bad.

It can come across like that and that was my first impression, but I forget items in lists and it doesn't mean I don't care about that item.

We elected Ronald Reagan twice, and he's revered as a political demigod by some still. A little forgetfulness is hardly a bar to the presidency.

I saw this live. It was embarrassing, but if that's all you have to do to fall out of contention, then this race is a joke. It's not like he gave false information, was found doing something illegal or immoral, or even said something his constituents strongly disagree with.

The guy had a brain fart. Come on...

Some Perry supporters declared his campaign over and suggested he head back to Texas to focus on his job as governor.

Guardian, when exactly did his supporters say this? How many of them said it? Do you really think some supporters telling him to go home suggests that his campaign is over?

The cover of the Houston Chronicle today was "Oops". Perry is being ridiculed in his own state. The senior Republican senator, Kay Baily Hutchison openly despises him, mostly because of the deep-in-the-mud campaign he ran against her when she challenged him for Governor.

Like almost anyone, I can understand a brain fart. It comes when you can't recall something you used to know. But to forget one of only three parts your own economic plan? What that says to me is that he doesn't really have an economic plan that he has carefully considered. What he has is a script. And he flubbed his lines.

Of course, the GOP water-carriers supporters will be along shortly to hand-wave the event.

However, one can imagine the comments if Obama had made a gaffe like that.

Obama couldn't make a gaffe ike that. He wants government to control our live cuz hes a soshulizt lol.

Yep, we all know Obama would never make a flub like that, at least as long as the teleprompter was turned on...

I never get this teleprompter meme. The Obama I recognise is the one who gave a competent, long and detailed Q&A session in front of the House Republicans last year without the need of a teleprompter.

As I heard about it this morning I felt the same way. I am no Perry supporter but the gaffe seemed rather trivial and should not derail a candidacy IMO.

Yes. Candidates can get eliminated for the Dumbest reasons.
Just as Dukakis and Dean.

Unfortunately for him, It shows him forgetting a fundamental pillar of his economic plan while repeatedly stating
...um... a eliminate education...um a...eliminate education...um a... eliminate education....
he has opened up himself to the very obvious criticism, "If he took education more seriously, perhaps he wouldn't have made such a blunder."

Yes, he is no longer a serious contender, but not simply because of this flub. This is only one of a long line of flubs he has made. It's the final nail in the coffin, that's all.

ETA: As Tricky pointed out, his flub (and all the others) alludes to a shallow campaign.

By itself, it's just a brain-fart. Happens to all of us.

The problem is that Perry has had a lot of brain farts in these debates, and his poll numbers kept slipping as a result. He really needed to come out strong during the debate, and he screwed the pooch.

That's why people are saying his campaign is dead...Not because he had one goof, but it was one goof in a series of goofs when he really, really, really needed to not goof.

Oops.
