The Panama Deception (1992)

Yes, I remember it well. My very first real crush was on a girl in my second grade class who had been evacuated to our base as part of Blade Jewel.
 
The internet was already there. And many of us were using online services and reading the news wires.

There was even this thing called a gopher server you could loose to look up lists of information.
 
This documentary was shown to us a few times in my academic career: once in high school and once in a course I took on American foreign policy in university.

It shows on CBC's The Passionate Eye from time to time.

A very interesting look at not just the facts of what exactly transpired in Panama - from the perspective of ordinary Panamanians, but also very instructive when it comes to analyzing the ways in which the media portrays American adventurism.
 
I am not sure the point of the OP I remember it. Before the internet we had groovy things like TV Radio, newspaper some of us even wrote on paper and sent it to each other to keep in touch.

I absolutely 100% abhore what the US did. But 100% agree with the reasons they did it. Fortunately the US has not continued to use the precendent established by those actions against other countries. So I for one are willing to forgive and forget

You're willing to forget. Those who were murdered are dead and can't get justice. Family members who lost loved ones don't forget.

Sorry I am confused, are you talking about those who died from drug habits fueled by Noriega's drug trafficing

Or possibly the gang related deaths fueled by the need to contol the drugs Noriega's trafficed

I know you cant possibly be talking about the poor civilians caught up in the fighting. Otherwise that would suggest you value a Panamanian life more than an American or European life. For someone with such strong social justice beliefs I find this hard to believe

he's referring to the civilian casualties from the American bombardment of the capital city. Its pretty graphically depicted in the movie from people who there on the ground when it happened.
 
I dunno, people might care - especially those who are involved/interested in US/latin american relations. Other people interested in the media and how it shapes public opinion may also care.

I grant that there are plenty of people that don't care about those things though..;)

On the other hand, is choosing the lesser of the two evils all that wrong. Lets say Panama was not invaded. Would we then be dealing with posts. Why didn't the US do something about.........how could they let all those people die from illegal drugs
 
lol - not sure that either/or is valid. I do not agree that the situation for Panamanian citizens was a humanitarian crisis sufficient to cause an international outcry due to inaction. Im sure the cokeheads were able to find their fix well enough through the change in leadership, after all, we are talking about drugs here. They're pretty much a constant.

But I do concede there likely would have been some kind of criticism for not invading from the cowboys who were chomping at the bit..;)
