Who will it be? Right now they are in disarray with no leader and no direction. They thoroughly trashed their old motto of small govt, lower spending so no one is going to believe that "oh if only we vote the republicans back in they will do it right this time". I think some understand the task. They have to totally change their philosophy if they want to get some power back and I think Jindal is the best chance for the repubs right now. They don't appear to have many choices and Palin is hopefully out of any equation now.

Good question. They really need to ditch the relgion crap and get a backbone. Expediancy isn't going to cut it. They need to go back to the basics and be the party of small government and fiscal responsibility.

The uneducable right wing actually still seems to think Palin has a future outside of Alaska. The rushblob was ranting about how it was all McCain's fault that he lost the election and that Palin was actually a big boost to his campaign.

The same people who brought us PNAC and their lunatic manifesto are now pretty well-entrenched in the GOP.

The witch may be back, wack as ever, and none of her partisans will have figured out that she is why they are outside looking in.

I would love to see a Jindal/Palin or Palin/Jindal ticket in 2012. I like hearing the fat deaf guy crying.

I think much depends on how Obama governs. If he does half respectably, the GOP will need a moderate candidate. If he suffers too many disasters -- and I don't think it'll take many -- we'll see the neocons back in action.

I don't think the grown up Republicans are going the christian fundamentalist route. Thus, Palin and Jindal are out. Oh, I believe they'll make a shot at it but the business type Republicans are not going to let it become the party of the South. I think Mittens will emerge as the one who gets the nod.

Bobby Jindal has the conservative creds, appears to be intelligent (Oxford degree, turned down Harvard Med and Yale Law). It will be interesting to see how far his star can rise. I have never heard him speak.

Every time I've seen him on tv he's appeared smart, level headed, and had ideas anyone could get behind. I believe he's done a good job in Louisiana. Here's a link to his ratings (along with several other governors):

Cripes, you make it sound like they didn't get a single vote. When in actuality, all they needed to win was to get 2% of voters to change sides. Only a minor improvement in leadership is needed.

That said, I wonder how Alaska replaces senators? Palin can't appoint herself, but a special election would make her a Senator with more experience on 2012 than Obama has now. Plus her experience as a Governator. Plus the big plus of representing a majority faction - Women are NOT a minority.

Things would have turned out different this time if Palin had been playing in the national spotlight a bit more.

Even if McCain won what would be the point? He wouldn't have been able to get anything accomplished with the dems in control of congress. I think this is time for the repubs to totally reform their platform and base. Yes they have a lot of votes with evangelicals but I think it's high time that they lose their influence in this country. You can't tell me that right now there is a clear nationally known leader with a strong message for the republican party. If Palin really is it then that does not bode well for them in the future.

I have no idea who might be the next Big Thing in Republican politics, but after hearing MIckey Edwards being interviewed on the radio I hope whoever it is follows his advice.

He's against stem cell research and for teaching creationism. You're behind those ideas?

No but I don't really see another repub better than him right now to lead their party. He's young, smart, well spoken, and cares about helping people in his state. If there are others who the repubs could get behind I'd like to hear who they are. I think some of his stances like on the topics you mentioned are wrong but unless they change their platform to get away from the religious vote (which I think they should do...but likely won't) those stances will remain.

In Palin's defense, she was dropped into the final exam without having attended the class. If she decides to run in 2012 she has 4 years to prepare. She should make a couple of foreign trips. Talk with some people in the cities with populations larger than her state to get an idea how the rest of us live. Read the Economist every week. Read some presidential biographies. Formulate some policies. Start forming the grass roots organization to rival Obama's.

Essentially, prove that she is more than just an empty skirt. Show that she can do "presidential' in addition to "folksy".

I doubt she has it in her. We shall see.

I think Bobby Jindal is smart, but if he's really smart he'll wait until 2016 before he makes a run at the presidency.

You never know. Clinton became president in part because certain "smart" democrats did not wish to challenge popular first term president George H. W. Bush.

It also remains to be seen how a person of Indian ancestry who converted to Catholicism will play with the Republican base.
