The 14th First Annual Igâ„¢ Nobel Prize Ceremony

Thursday, September 30, 2004 -- 7:30 PM
Harvard University's Sanders Theatre

Ten new Ig Nobel Prizes will be awarded in categories ranging from Physics, Medicine and Chemistry to Literature and Peace. The new winners are traveling to the ceremony, at their own expense, from several continents. The Prizes will be handed to them by a group of genuine, genuinely bemused Nobel Laureates, all before a standing-room only audience of 1200 people.

INTERNET TELECAST: The ceremony will be telecast live on the Internet, thanks to generous support from the Harvard Extension School.

This year's theme: DIET.

ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: In addition to the awarding of the Prizes, the ceremony will be jam-packed with a variety
of momentously inconsequential events. Among them:

* KEYNOTE ADDRESS by 2003 Ig Nobel Literature Prize winner John Trinkaus.(author of more than 80 academic reports about things that annoyed him).
* The 24/7 LECTURES, in which several of the world's top thinkers each will explain his or her subject twice:
FIRST: a complete technical description in TWENTY-FOUR (24) SECONDS*
Time limits to be enforced by Mr. John Barrett, the Ig Nobel Referee
AND THEN: a clear summary that anyone can understand, in SEVEN (7) WORDS
>Rich Roberts. Topic: HEREDITY
>Harry Lipkin. Topic: PHYSICS
>Eugenie Scott. Topic: EVOLUTION
>Barry Sears. Topic: DIET
>Sylvia Earle. Topic: OCEANOGRAPHY
* "THE ATKINS DIET OPERA" -- the world premiere of the mini-opera
starring Wayne Hobbs, Margot Button, Jane Tankersley, Greg Neil, and the Nobel Laureates and other Distinguished Scientists
* DIET vs. DIET -- A live scientific comparison test of several diets

* The Nobel Laureates who will present the Ig Nobel Prizes to the winners:
Dudley Herschbach, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry,1986
William Lipscomb, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 1976
Rich Roberts, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine,1993
...and others, some also in person, others in electronic form
* The WIN-A-DATE-WITH-A-NOBEL-LAUREATE CONTEST
* Karen Hopkin, creator of the Studmuffins of Science Calendar
* Gala Introduction of the Audience Delegations
* All speeches will brief, and thus especially delightful
* Portions of the ceremony will be simultaneously translated into several languages, in a manner most pleasing.
* The Traditional "Welcome, Welcome" Speech
* The Traditional "Goodbye, Goodbye" Speech
* Other wondrous things.

OMG!!! I LOVE this event!

I bought the book and couldn't put it down.

It's like what would happen if Monty Python stepped out from behind the cameras and actually grabbed questionable researchers and pulled them out in front of a crowd to mock them.... what a brilliant idea.

Thanks for the notice. :)

I'll be sure to watch.

I think the talk on the discovery of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard duck might well be a highlight....:p
