This is a 20-1 countdown of clips. I wonder how people feel about the direction of religion worldwide in the near future, and is there any way we can improve on our effort for effective, science-based world building based on solid reason and evidence. Thoughts?

In any case kudos to the author of this incredibly well done playlist.

I think I'll need to ponder a minute or two on your very simple ;) questions.

Meanwhile, thanks for the link to the videos, and all I can say is thank God for Hitch.

I think some will find a few of the clips rather rude, to which I would ask "so what?" I was asked today, by a well-educated person mind you, if I wasn't just being contrarian eating meat instead of fish on this second Friday in lent. Wouldn't I feel better doing the right thing and having the fish? This from a woman with a college degree and it was clear that my reply that I wasn't superstitious offended her.

It's clear that being considered "offensive." is unavoidable.

Damnit, I ate fish today! Ok, I didn't know anyone was supposed to, and it was a really nice piece of beer-battered cod, and I was home alone so it wouldn't have upset anyone no matter what I ate, but it's the principle.

I had stuffed flounder for lunch. Boy, do I feel better.

"Don't kill the messenger!"
I won't, but I will thank him/her. I know you didn't put that playlist together, but thanks so much for linking it. I had heard bits about this guy, but damn is he entertaining! I had no idea there was so many gold nuggets in his talks.

but one little thing....in hitchslap 4.....is that john stamos there? wtf would he be doing on any show with a guy like hitch?

I'm not sure why, but I watched the whole thing.

He's quite good. I hadn't watched any video of him before.

I'm much more sympathetic toward religion than the average JREFer, so I actually expected to be somewhat offended. I often am by Dawkins. However, Hitch seemed better to me, and by the end, I think I figured out what it was that I liked about him. I think the core of his message in those clips was, "No, really, they believe this nonsense!" and he goes on to explain why that's bad. He isn't overly acerbic. He doesn't try to demonstrate how stupid they are with facts, figures, or theories. He just states what they believe, and connects the dots on what the implications are, including occasionally getting a bit indignant about what those people are saying about him.

My personal favorite was actually the Sean Hannity segment. I didn't actually relish the nasty comments about the recently deceased Jerry Falwell. However, it was wonderful to listen to him point out to that blowhard that Hannity had obviously asked Hitchens to come on his show just for the purpose of being put down by Hannity, but that Hitch wasn't going to play along by being nice about it.

Hitchens: ". . . you took up all my time with your rather long unlettered response."

Hannity: "Ufffff."

Reed: ?????????

Ask her if she'll be fasting during Ramadan...

Me too, but since I am not religious I can eat whatever I feel like and not feel guilty about it. I would not offend friends or people in general on purpose (well, there are exceptions but they involve those who wish to force/bend others to their personal beliefs).:)

In that vein, I had baby seal (fried in wild mountain flowers in sea turtle fat) for lunch today!! Delicious and unbelievably tender!!!!

Ahh thank you for posting that.. Got an hour long three way interrogation by some of my coworkers on my lunch break when it became apparent that I don't believe we are in the end times and that I was an atheist. Made me feel better watching some of those videos and reminding myself I am not the only one who realizes that the Left Behind books are fiction, not a documentary (though it was kinda funny when I asked them how they knew they had the right god, with all the countless ones humanity has come up with.. They looked at me like I was speaking another language before saying I just had to look into my heart and read the bible and it would be obvious...)

What was that quote, something about what can be accepted on faith can also be rejected on faith?
