So, I got myself an iPad recently, and checking out all the various apps that are out there. I wasn't sure where to put this. I finally decided on the computers forum, as it is mostly about the technology, and not about the politics and content.
One of the most hyped apps, at least to me, is "The Daily", touted to be the first iPad only magazine. Well, I checked it out, even bought a subscription, but I have mixed feelings about this thing.
It seems stuck in the past. Fells like a desperate attempt to carry the old-fashioned, dying, magazine business (which sells paying (!) subscribers to advertisers) over into the new world of the web, without understanding this new world at all, what consumers CAN and WANT do now or understanding why the magazine/newspaper business is dying.
Skimming through "The Daily" feels like slamming into a brick wall repeatedly. It essentially tries to re-create the olden experience of a paper-based magazine, down to fixed fonts (size and appearance), two-column typesetting (three in landscape mode) and full-page ... erm ... -screen ads that are hard to distinguish from actual content. It seems to ignore the capabilities and offerings of the iPad nearly completely (except for adding video and interactive cross-word puzzles and sudokos). There's no search. And it doesn't even remember on which page I was when I put it away -- even old-fashioned paper magazine could do THAT!
