The case against Hillary Clinton

Don't care. The current guy's a putz. Won't vote Republican under any circumstance. If Hillary gets the nomination, I will vote for her. Twice, if necessary.

If Hillary is nominated, I will vote for a third party candidate. That's right: I'll throw my vote away!

Welcome back to 2004, Ravdin. That's exactly what the reds want you to do.

I live in California, which will almost certainly go to the Democratic nominee (it won't even be close). So if you're worried that my vote for a third party candidate is a vote for the GOP, you can set your mind at ease.

Since when is California a lock for the Democrats? Don't they have a Republican governor? Didn't both Nixon and Reagan come from California?

That was a long time ago. Our Governator is GOP, but he's not really in the fold. Our two uncontested senators are solidly Democratic, as are most of the other statewide elected officials. Trust me, there's no way California will go to the GOP nominee, any more than Texas will ever be a blue state.

Actually, the thread made me think of 2000, when I opted to vote third party instead of for Bush or Gore. I know, I know- it was very wrong of me to think they were the same, and with the benefit of hindsight it's painfully obvious that Gore would have been a much better president. But there are two mitigating circumstances that make me feel a little better about it today. The first is that Gore handily won California without my help (you may berate me for not having moved to Palm Beach to vote for him there if you like). Secondly, it pleases me to this day that I've never voted for Joe Lieberman.

I wouldn't have voted for HRC under any circumstances before I read this, but Hitchens states the case beautifully all the same.

My favorite part is the byline:

"Why on earth would we choose to put the Clinton family drama at the center of our politics again." Emphasis mine.

You'd almost get the impression that Hitchens was American...

That California currently has a Republican governor says a lot about the performance of Gray Davis, the former Democratic governor. The Donks have won California in the Electoral college for four straight elections, with margins ranging from 10-14%. If the Democrats do not carry California in 2008, it will be because they are getting wiped out completely, which certainly seems unlikely at this juncture.

He is american.

It says more about how little Californians understood about their own state's political system. They seemed unaware that the "ballot initiative" system in place in their state almost completely robbed Davis of the ability to make the changes that would have benefited CA. They were also blissfully unaware that the energy "crisis" was created by: 1) the initiative system; 2) manipulation of the market by Enron; and 3) the utter refusal of the federal government to step in and investigate Enron even after Davis begged them to.

I don't support Hillary, but that's the case against Hillary? Big deal! A family fable about her name turns out to be untrue? Join the club, do you know how many families have those kind of fables? Watch Antiques Roadshow and you'll see how often family lore doesn't quite fit with history.

I really hope she doesn't win, but I don't fear it either. We'll survive 8 years of GWB, we can survive Hillary or whoever gets elected.

In case you didn't notice, there was a lot more to the article. I'd tell you to go read it, but no doubt you'd protest that you already have. But here are some of the main points, all of which are far more serious than a fable about her name's origin:

1. William Jefferson Clinton shamefully mistreated several women, including Monica Lewinsky, Gennifer Flowers, Kathleen Willey (who he allegedly groped in the Oval Office, while he was president), and Juannita Broderick (who he allegedly raped). Although no one disputes his sexual indiscretions, HRC knowingly lied about them to help him get elected in 1992. Although she poses as a champion of women's rights, she has also participated in the slander of these women in order to further her own ambitions.

2. She presided over the HMO debacle in the 90s, made the system worse, and now she is posing as a champion of healthcare reform.

3. As a senator, HRC supported the invasion of Iraq and the removal of Saddam Hussein. But rather than defend her previous position, she is pretending she never held it, counting on our short term memory as a tactic for winning a few percentage points in the primaries.

Although I'm willing to vote for Democrats, I never joined the party and I never will. I hope the Democrats will have more sense than to nominate her for the presidency.
