Hilarious quote"

The Texas Republican Party, meanwhile, celebrated what they considered a major victory that makes Texas "a nationwide leader in pro-life legislation."

Funny, coming from the state that has executed more people than any other.

They are thinking ahead, so many more people will be available for execution in 25 years.

Just more proof that these bastards don't care about "life", and just want to see women suffer/damaged/killed.

Now the abortion clinics will have to mop the floors on a regular basis. Freakin' beyond the pale, man.

It would be, if there was no difference at all between a fetus in it's 6th month of development and a convicted criminal.

And exactly what is the percentage of performed abortions which occur at the 6th month mark of pregnancy?

The primary effect, according to the news analysts, will be closing the majority of the state's clinics, which won't be able to afford to upgrade or meet the other requirements.
I'm sure this will immediately be challenged... I wonder which way that will go.

It seems like the "anti" folks are being quite successful in their bid to if not outlaw abortion completely, make it so onerous and difficult as to accomplish much the same thing... At least in many states.
This of course means that women with sufficient resources will simply go to states with more liberal regulations, while the poor may avail themselves of the above-pictured devices.

At least there are so many hospitals that sterilize women when they get say an ectopic pregnancy instead of performing an abortion. We call them catholic hospitals.

That is probably the most offensive thing I've seen all day. I hope something terrible happens to that guy.

It's all about safety for women, is it?

...Texans should be made aware of the state's grimmest medical statistic: women are more likely to die from childbirth than from an abortion. That's according to a study published in the February 2012 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology Medical Journal. The study, conducted by Dr. David Grimes, a clinical professor in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, found that nationally the risk of death associated with a full-term pregnancy and delivery is 8.8 deaths per 100,000, while the risk of death linked to legal abortion is 0.6 deaths per 100,000 women. That means a woman carrying a baby to term is 14 times more likely to die than a woman who chooses to have a legal abortion.

In Texas, the statistics are worse. In 2011 Texas women died in childbirth at a rate of 24.63 per 100,000. “It's alarming,” said Dr. Donald Dudley, Obstetrician & Gynecologist at the UTHSC San Antonio.

Texas should be seeing only about 5 deaths per 100,000 said Dudley, and the present rate is comparable to a developing nation.

In Texas, women die in childbirth at a rate of almost three times the national average. By contrast, fewer than 1 woman in 100,000 die as a result of legal abortion.

People, quit talking about the safety of the woman. When restrictive abortion laws are combined with cuts to Planned Parenthood and other women's health services, it becomes clear that it's all about your desire to restrict women's reproductive rights.

Hell, at the end, even Perry and Dewhurst quit pretending that it was about women's safety.

And it's none of your business.

What would help the pro-choice lobby is this:

1. Stop calling abortion "women's health", and just acknowledge it for what it is. 4Kids did similar **** when they dubbed anime and it didn't win them many long-term fans. Honesty works far better than trying to find euphemisms.

2. Be more organised. What makes the anti-choice lobby so effective is that they are very well organised, and are often single-issue. The pro-choice lobby often have other issues on the agenda (environment, taxes, criminal justice etc.).

3. Drop comparisons to the death penalty full stop. The OP stated how it was hypocritical to execute criminals yet pass draconian abortion laws. This makes you look bad, especially when Anti-choicers can also paint you as soft on crime.

4. Mitigate the "it's my body, so **** off, I've got mine" attitude that some people seem to get. Frankly, it reminds some people of the sort of people that wrecked the economy. Make it more, "why should you be involved in very personal matters?". It also comes across as hypocritical, considering that many pro-choicers would be opposed to fiscal libertarianism, which can espouse similar rhetoric.

ETA:

5. Find an effective way to respond to "terrify them into avoiding sex out of marriage" sex education. that "scare 'em straight" attitude is still prevalent among anti-choicers and those who would be sympathetic towards them.

Is there a smilie / gif file for smashing one's head against the wall?

Elizabeth I, do you know what's behind the childbirth mortality stat? There's usually a story behind such a number. I am curious to find out what that is.

As to the Hair: I'm glad he'll be gone pretty soon.

Pro-life is pro-life - shouldn't matter what end of the spectrum the person is, right? Thus, the execution-happy Texans are not, in fact, "pro-life". At best, they are "pro-birth", because after a kid is born, Texas Republicans could give a crap.

Singleminded, you mean.

No. Being against executions is not the same as advocating we let people walk. Well, maybe to stupid pe-

Oh.

"It's my body."
"These are personal matters." How are those two different?

How about this: totally inform teens about all the good and bad aspects of sex, which gives them more information, enables them to make more informed choices, which will result in fewer unwanted pregnancies in the first place, and thus fewer abortions. They don't expect teens to drive without receiving instruction and passing a test - why do they expect teens to "just say no to sex"?

They have a victory just like there was a victory in the Pyrrhic War.

The GOP will be dead in a decade. Not sure which Know Nothings will arise to replace it, but they managed to wound themselves fatally this week.
