Should I laugh or should I cry?

Sinn Fein/IRA urges protest at Bush Irish Visit

Hmm.

In a detailed motion to be published today, the five Sinn Féin TDs accuse the Government of “assisting hundreds of thousands of US troops to participate in the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq”.

They claim Irish assistance in the war has contributed to a situation where thousands of people are being killed.

In fairness, they know what they're talking about.

Sinn Fein contributed to a situation where thousands of people were killed

The statement expresses anger at the cost of the war, which it claims includes an estimated spend of more than £100bn (€83.6bn) by the US alone.

Two points: Once again, Sinn Fein can speak from intimate experience on the
cost of war.

It's also surprising to see Sinn Fein express anger at anything, given their rather equivocal responses to loathsome deeds closer to home.

Sinn Fein fails to express anger at murder and abduction of mother of ten

It get's better (or worse).

IRA says sorry

We are sorry that the suffering of those families has continued for so long. We wish to apologise for the grief caused.

So why aren't Sinn Fein feeling GWB's pain at US abuses in Abu Ghraib prison? I mean, it could happen to the best of us, "complicating factors" being what they are?

Amazingly for a political party that gets angry at the financial cost of war, RL=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/3112266.stm]the murder of policemen[/URL] leaves Sinn Fein strangely unmoved.

Aengus O Snodaigh TD said: “Supporting this war in any shape or form goes against the wishes of the people of Ireland and against our neutrality.”

Again Sinn Fein is speaking from experience, having for decades supported a "war" conducted on behalf of the Irishpeople, that was nonetheless repudiated by the Irish people.

Not that Sinn Fein is without like minded souls.

"We will be joining with other groups such as the Peace and Neutrality Alliance, the NGO Peace Alliance and the Irish Anti-War Movement to ensure that when George Bush comes to Ireland for the US-EU Summit the people of Ireland register their protest at his foreign policies and the occupation of Iraq."

This should tell you all you need to know about the objectivity and common sense of the Peace and Neutrality Alliance, the NGO Peace Alliance and the Irish Anti-War Movement.

Like I said at the beginning of the post I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry at this sort of excrement. I guess I won't know until the results of the June elections.

Isn't this just another case of someone capitalizing on a "popular viewpoint" to further their own cause?

Indeed - seems to me it depends on whether the Catholics of Northern Ireland continue to think that apologists for terrorism and organised crime are more worthy of their votes than legitimate political parties.

Yes, but Sinn Fein's past history and present form makes their hypocrisy all the more disgusting.

Not forgetting that they're running south of the border, too, which is what might move me to tears.
