Barnes & Noble has updated its Nook tablet lineup ahead of the holiday season, and like Amazon its traditional 7" product is being joined by a larger 9" version. These tablets, dubbed the Nook HD and Nook HD+, are currently available for pre-order at starting prices of $199 and $269. The devices are scheduled to begin shipping in the US on November 1.

Compettion is good, and this looks like some good completion for the new Amazon kindle tablets, as well as the Nexus 7 (and the upcoming iPad Mini)

This 'new' two hundred dollarish price point must really be killing profits on these devices, most tear-downs put their parts cost at close to their retail cost.

I guess B&N must have wanted to make sure they got word out there that their device exists before everyone buys a competing device, since the new Nook tablets don't ship for another 5 weeks ...

Commoditization is to be expected. The devices should not be the big profit drivers, they should be the platform for delivery of the big profit drivers. Its the same reason a *lot* of phones are sold cheaply or given away when you agree to a 2 year contract.

Anyway, I'm definitely looking into the new Nook as a xmas present to myself this year.

I still prefer hard copies - too many questions about how long you have the things you paid for.
The books, not the device.

Yeah, I need to look more into it. I only rarely keep the books I buy for more than a few months, unless they are textbooks or manuals. And I do like to give away those books I don't intend keep. I imagine thats a bit more difficult to do with an eBook.
