Got the following email at StopSylvia.com, with the subject "StopSylvia.com - Incredible":

Robert,

I just wanted to send you a quick email to let you know that your work as a professional skeptic on StopSylvia.com is second to none; absolutely incredible. I stumbled upon it a few hours ago and cannot stop reading it. I always felt that horrible vulture of a human being was simply preying in those looking for desperate answers in their time of grief, or simply those arbitrarily questioning their future. My favorite article thus far, and by far, has been your visit to her Vegas show. Incredible. Though I would have been much more fierce than you were, you handled it brilliantly. What's more important, you opened some people's eyes that day as well and they saw that horrible thing for what she really is.

I'm sorry to learn of your health problems, I wish you a full recovery and good health! You're making a difference in this world. Sylvia was right about one more thing - were all here for a purpose, a reason, and yours is to ensure that people open their eyes and don't fall victim to her or any other of her type (John Edwards uses the same methods).

Take care,
[name]

Here is my reply:

Mr. [name]

Thanks so much for your kind email.

"Professional skeptic"?

I must say, the pay is terrible. ;)

To be clear, I make absolutely no money from the web site, nor from any of my other skeptical endeavors (you might enjoy my previous web site, "Stop Kaz" (www.StopKaz.com).

No, I do what I do simply out of my conviction that it needs doing.

I understand your belief that you would have been "more fierce" had you attended that Vegas show, and certainly, there are those within Skepticism who feel that I could/should have been more so. But I did what I did, and it turned out reasonably well. Had I known then that only a month or so later I would almost die from a massive stroke, and that the web site would then be stagnant for several years, perhaps I would have been more fierce, knowing tat evening might well be my "last hurrah" as it were.

But yes, some eyes were opened that evening, and I have no regrets about it.

Best,

Great letter. Perfect response.

I don't know about the notion that all things have a reason, but it really doesn't matter if it's true or not, she found you, and it made a difference in her life.

Thanks, Julia!

Seems like the correspondent already had figured out that Browne was a fraud, he just was glad to find it all layed out on my site.

Yeah, the "everything happens for a reason" thing is popular in many circles:

In Browne's Novus Spiritus, the reason things happen is: you "charted" them to happen.

In Christianity, the reason things happen is "they are a part of God's Plan"

In (I believe) Hinduism, things happen because of Karma.

Other newagey belief systems get into their misapplication of string theory and such.

...and so on.

Not many belief systems seem to acknowledge that sometimes things just happen.

Katie, nobody has used that line on me to justify my stroke, as far as I can recall.

But I have thought about what possible "reason" someone could come up with for my stroke and my heart attack (not counting my decades of an atrocious diet and sedentary lifestyle, of course).

Here's what I came up with:

1. My stroke made me a hemiplegic, which has allowed me to see, on a daily basis, plain-as-day evidence of my Susan's love for me.

2. My heart attack gave me the incentive I needed to totally change my diet for the better.

3. My stroke left me unemployed, forcing us to leave Southern Californoa's high cost of living. We ended up here in Salem, where I will soon meet you! :)

Wow, you have definitely come to terms with what's happened to you. Unfortunately for me, it's usually followed by, "well, God doesn't give you more than you can handle". Ok, well, I wish that a god would pay a little more attention to what I can actually handle. I really a sissy! :D

KatieG, I don't actually believe that those are the reasons I had the stroke and heart attack.

They are what I came up with as "reasons" which someone who is of the "everything happens for a reason" or "God works in mysterious ways" mindset would see.

The actual reasons, as I said, are more mundane: decades of indulging in salty, fried foods and sitting in front of a computer for 8-12 hours each day.

The purported "reasons" might bring me comfort if I actually believed them, but I don't.

Sorry I wasn't clear on that.

RSL,

I believe several of your correspondents have pointed out the reasons for your health problems are related to you being a horrible evil person who attacks good wholesome people like Sylvia.
