I received the following email at StopSylvia, with the subject "information":

Ok so I can tell you things that would freak you out. I am scared to
say here but I am willing to take a lie detector test to prove what I
know. These psychics are a bigger scam then you could even imagine.
There is something very very sinister going on that you can't even
imagine. I have personal experiences that you wouldn't believe. Please
keep informing people about these frauds so they lose their business
cause it is very important to our enemies well being. Feel free to
contact me via email maybe we can even talk on the phone.I would love
that.

I get emails like this one from time to time, of the "if you only knew what I knew" or (singsong) "I know something you don't knoooow..." variety.

I think that the comment about the psychic business being "very important to our enemies well being." might be a veiled reference to Satan (who is sometimes referred to in the Bible (and by many Christians) as "the enemy".

Here was my reply:

Sounds intriguing. Do tell!

If this one runs true to the form, either:

  • I will never hear from this person again, or
  • He or she will try to string me along with hints and insinuations about what they know (but, darn it all, aren't quite brave enough to divulge just yet...)

As a former believer in this nonsense the things that changed my mind completely were cold hard facts. I remember just seeing someone like Michael Shermer explaining cold readings didnt have much of an impact, as it is easy to say, " well he is just not opened minded" but reading Robert's articles on SSB plus watching psychic stings where people make up stories and the psychic runs with the lie, convinced me they are all a bunch of lying thieving egotistical, money grubbing charlatans. It's hard for even the die hard believer to argue with a psychic sting!! I saw a few really good ones on youtube. It's much more compelling than wondering if the psychic had researched their subject first and were able to get hits that way. I wish their were more stings done as they offer 100 percent evidence of fraud with no wondering or explaining away misses.

I agree, I used to write most skeptical material off as closed minded, or written by people who'd just never had a psychic experience of their own. It was the facts that did it for me too. Specifically, catching Sylvia Browne faking trances.

I have never seen a video of a psychic sting. Can you suggest a few good ones?

Someone who believes that psychics are part of a "sinister," apparently Satanic, conspiracy is exactly the same as someone who believes they are real on other grounds. I think your reply is exactly right, Robert- give 'em the rope.

On a side note...I don't know why folks like this always resort to the "I'll take a lie-detector test!!!" thing, as if that would infallibly demonstrate the truth of what they say instead of only their depth of conviction about it.

...or their ability to lie without having any misgivings whatsoever about doing so.

Thanks for the links!

Busy time at work but when I get a chance in the next day or so I'm happy to post about the trances and how I figured it out. I'm sure I've told the story more than once here, but I don't think I ever started an actual thread about it.

Thanks so much for posting these links. I love the crossing over sting, I wish there was a follow up video confronting the psychics with their lies. Marc Jade, the phony Canadian Psychic in this clip who puts on the shy, humble type of schtick has a facebook page where he allowed people to post their glowing reviews of him. I put a link to this video on his timeline and said "explain this " because he makes such of a jerk out of himself. He immediately removed the link and disabled anyone from posting comments. There really IS no way out of something so blatantly fraudulent, so i guess they just ignore it and hope it will go away.

At some point after Sylvia made me a minister for her church (long story but I didn't go through any minister training, Sylvia just ordained me because I was something of an old friend, though I'd been in another state for over a decade), I realized I had been gone for years and was rusty on the philosophy. If I was going to be a good minister, I should at least be up to date on the philosophy, right? So I went out and bought her books. And I dusted off all my old trance tapes from the late 1980s, of which I think there were 40-50.

I was just making my way through the book on angels, where she describes in great detail the data FRANCINE had given them on all of the different types of angels and how you could basically tell them apart by the colors of their wings. In fact, thanks to Francine, there was enough information on all the different wings and colors to fill an entire New York Times bestselling book. So I had the angel book open on the coffee table, and I decided today was as good a day as any to start on the old trance tapes.

So, here is what made me realize Sylvia was not channeling any entity from the other side.

The VERY first tape I listened to was a trance class in which Francine happened to make this statement about angels:

Of course they don't have wings!

They do not have wings, they do not need wings, wings are silly. They're for birds!

The reason why they put wings on them is, they couldn't understand why they could travel so fast, and the reason why they could travel so fast is because they think themselves to a place, and they're instantly there.

But it would be a horrifying... anomaly to have something flapping around that grew out of your shoulder blades.

We've always been horrified by that. That's like a monster of some kind!

"We've always been horrified by that"?!

So, there I had just finished that entire book on wings, as channeled by Francine, and I hear Francine say that.

It should have taken me seconds to figure out that there is absolutely no excuse for that. Francine is over there on the other side hanging out with the angels, she claims. The wings issue should not be vague or confusing in any way. "We have always been horrified by that" cannot in any way be reconciled with a chart delineating all the various types of angel wings. But I was just totally stunned. And I turned it around for a long while, trying to find a way to make this make sense that didn't involve Sylvia faking the trances.

And then it made me mad. Because I DID consider Sylvia a friend and I trusted her.

Here is a link to Robert's interesting article on the subject:

http://www.stopsylvia.com/articles/contradiction_doangelshavewings.shtml

I'm the one who provided him with copies of all the tapes. I had recorded most all of them personally.

The angels/wings issue turned out to be only the beginning. I went on to listen to almost all the tapes, mostly while recording them to send to Robert, curious to find discrepancies. And in fact, before Robert's stroke, we'd been collaborating on an article about all the contradictions in Francine's material on the life of Christ. All I can say is there were a lot. Unbelievable how none of us caught it back then. Or maybe some did, and maybe some people left without any of the rest of us being the wiser. Who knows.

That is one way to show that a person is talking rubbish. Find all the major statements that contradict other statements. There will be plenty, provided there is enough material.

...which is one of the major reasons I chose SB as the focus of my site over several others I was considering:

With her having published a metric buttload of books, I figured that there could be a wealth of contradictions among them.

There is.

The easiest way to debunk these frauds is to ask them questions you already know the answer to, or make up a fake family history and guide them through that (even on the fly).

"Im seeing the letter H"
"Yes! That's my late uncle Henry! He was a sailor!"

Not unlike your friend RSL, who if I remember correctly merely asked what his materal grandfather's name was, and when she responded, replied with "incorrect" and sat down.

I had forgotten that! That was classic.

That was Claus Larsen. He asked for his grandfather's name, she said Howard, and he said no and sat back down. His grandfather's name was Flodin.
