static in computer sound

In the last few days my computer has started playing crackly static in the background whenever music is played. I've determined it is not the speakers, as the same thing occurs when plugging known good headphones into the line out jack. It occurs regardless of whether I'm playing a cd, streaming music, or playing mp3s. It only occurs when sound is playing - I can turn the volume up all the way with no static if there is nothing playing. Also, there are front and rear line out jacks - I get the same static plugged into either front or rear.

I guess I'll pop the case open and check connections, dust, etc., but do you have any ideas as to what else I might check for?

one final bit of info - I first noticed this just after installing Morrowind. But, I hadn't been playing music much on my computer before that, so I have no idea if there is any relation. But it's the only hardware/software change I can think of offhand.

Try reinstalling the audio drivers for your sound device. Perhaps they were corrupted somehow.
Also, check the device manager to see if there is any conflict with the device.

I uninstalled and reinstalled, and everything seems fine now. Thanks!

Morrowind? I miss that game... is it stealing if I download a game I bought, but the CD is gone?
