Well now, here's an(other) *interesting* little story about a sports commentator saying verrrrry bad stuff, while not realising his mic was still live and broadcasting (warning: story contains offensive and racist language):

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/mar/12/oklahoma-high-school-basketball-racial-slur

Perhaps (wearily) predictably, the man responsible, Matt Rowan, has attempted to formulate an excuse by a) presenting himself as a kindly, godly person (now where have we come across this sort of excusatory gambit before...), and b) in an impressively improbable doubling down, blamed his use of extreme and racist language on his diabetes:

Rowan, who described himself as a family man and former youth pastor, said there was “no excuse” for his comments before disclosing that he suffers from type 1 diabetes and attributing his use of racist language to hyperglycemia.

“I do not believe I would have made such horrible statements absent my sugar spiking,” the statement read.

“They’re kneeling? **** them,” one of the men said. “I hope Norman gets their ass kicked.”

He continued: “I hope they lose. C’mon Midwest City. They’re gonna kneel like that? Hell no. ... ******* *******.”

Yeah his excuse sounds totes legit. Who would have known his Diabetes induced Tourettes would kick in at the moment the players took a knee during the national anthem?

Poor guy is just misunderstood.

One thing occurs to me:

Given that this sort of thing (ie broadcasters saying unacceptable things while failing to notice that they're still on air) happens with a fair degree of regularity...

...what does it suggest about the frequency with which broadcasters make similarly offensive comments while they know their mic actually is switched off?

And with this example there is not the slightest ambiguity, no one can claim “oh in context it wasn’t so bad”.

Sadly I think it does show the extent of out and out racism in USA society - or rather especially in a certain section - the privileged.

Type 1 here, Hypoglycemia can cause rubbish to come out of my mouth, as my brain is being starved of glucose and not working properly.

I have never experienced hyperglycemia to cause that as it's the opposite, I am only a sample of 1 though.

The latest generic excuse for things like that is "That's not me. That's not who I am."

"Because I'm a Time Lord, and I've regenerated since those remarks were recorded. I have an entirely new character and personality, and incidentally I don't any of the debts the previous incarnation incurred."

Standard issue with a pathetic attempt at trying to call other hypocrites.

The last 12 months has really opened my eyes. Prior to then I would have said we had hardly any actual racists on the forum - apart from our few self declared ones - sadly I’ve been disabused of that.

Well, yeah. We've all said some disjointed stuff when not exactly in homeostasis. Who among us has not had a brain fart when our fermented-sugars-to-glucose ratio tilts to the former? Can't think of an instance where it brings up calmly conversational bile, though. Usually brings up the physical bile first.

Long time T2D here, insulin for maybe 40 years. Hypo is what causes immediate grief, a nervousness, jitters, MIGHT even cause psychosis. Hyp-er causes grogginess.

So unless the subject of this thread doesn't know the two words- hypo-vs-hyper, I call BS. But upthread, nothing to lose with a bogus excuse.

I'm diabetic and whenever my levels get too out of whack I turn into a clone of the racist, sexist, xenophobic, antisemitic comedians of my childhood. Fortunately I have syringes of stuff in the fridge to help me tone that down.
