Apparently, CNBC was soliciting for an economist to write a report finding that global warming was a hoax in anticipation of what was going to be found in (since-released) bipartisan The Economic Risks of Climate Change in the United States Report. They sent this request, however, to deSmog Blog, somehow mistaking their profile of the climate contrarian and economist Alan Carlin and his notorious activities as laudatory accolades and assumed he worked at DeSmog Blog!

Well, both. But I was referring to global warming. There's no hope to stop something when half the country doesn't accept that it's even real.

Well, there is a bit of difference between 60% of those who self-identify (in the current political era) as Republicans, especially in a politically oriented poll, and half the country. In most polls where politics isn't the primary focus, the number of people who accept climate change and humanity's role ranges from a simple majority 50-60% to a large majority of ~70%. Given all the hyperpartisanship rhetoric surrounding the topic and the large amounts money and effort being spent to confuse the issue, this is a sign that there is yet a chance prevent at least the worst impacts and potentials.

What poll do you cite that found 70%?

And "eternal lie" is a very good description of global warming denial.

Very good! I was actually trying to play off the death-rattle of journalism, but that does indeed adjust to fit both! Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy well researched and well written information, but so much of what passes for modern journalism has taken on a jaundiced (occasionally saffron) hue.

Your second sentence is also applicable to the second part of my question. I weep for the future about once a week reading "news" lately, even in my local dead-trees daily.

There are many recent polls in which support my statement of ~70%

If we go further back, there are more, just as I am sure there will be a lot more support over the next couple of years while we venture through the just beginning el Nino.
