Gore Vidal, American man of letters, author, playwright, essayist, screenwriter, wit, political activist, public speaker, atheist, skeptic de luxe, & half–step–brother–in–law of John F Kennedy died yesterday at 86 from complications of pneumonia at his home in California.

They make few like him anymore. Thanks for everything, sir.

Vidal's legacy is a mixed one. The bitter nuttiness of his declining years (when he embraced various vaguely defined conspiracy theories) has overshadowed the literacy accomplishments of his earlier career.

His essays before about 1990 remain highly readable, though, and for me he will always be the creator of the divine Myra Breckinridge, one of the most transgressive characters ever conceived by a major American writer.
