So I had a UFO experience

So it might have actually been going up or down when it appeared to be stationary.

Could be, but I don't think it was a helicopter, because it was soundless and only a faint light. I thought it was probably a metallic object under control and reflecting the suns light. But that would mean it was some kind of flying object in the time of sputnik one, and there was nothing else supposed to be up there at that time.

There were many different types and sizes of balloon in the sky back then. Still are.

A helicopter at 4000 or 5000 AGL would be a metallic object under control, could very possibly have a light that would appear faint, and quite possibly be soundless to you at that height.

Kinda off topic but I caused a "UFO experience" intentionally for a Boy Scout camp at night using kites and battery powered flashlights. Honestly it kinda creeped me out even knowing how it was done.

Could it have been something like this, but happening in a place where you couldn't see it directly, only hear it?

The U in UFO is the key. If you could not identity whatever it was.
Speculation is quite another thing. You are free to do that as much as you like but it still doesn't identify the event.
