Anyone know the mechanism for thickening of skin?
I was reading about barefoot walking and the article said that walking on gravel stimulated rapid skin thickening on the soles whereas walking on smooth concrete would wear the skin down faster than it grew because it didn't stimulate it enough.
How would this work? I'd always assumed the body just replaced skin that was worn away but a bit thicker than before but maybe it does react to certain types of stimulation.
