Sharon has stated he intends to pull all Israelis out of the Gaza Strip and part of the West Bank. He is taking a lot of heat from within his own coaltion for it. Protests by settlers are planned. To succeed, Sharon is going to need a lot of help/support from his political opposition in the Knesset.

Ballsy move on Sharon's part.

I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if some Palistinian killjoys celebrate by upping their attacks on Israelis in an effort to quash the plan.

Wouldn't that be cutting their noses off to spite their faces?

Never mind, that seems to be a common problem in Middle Eastern affairs.

Ah, you need a refersher in Realpolitik, my friend. ;)

The Palestinians will up their attacks so they can claim they "drove the Jews out of Gaza".

The Israelis will step up their actions to show they are not being driven out but leaving of their own accord, and to weaken Hamas so that a moderate Palestinian group can take over.

Look at the end of most wars, there is a spike of activity near the end....and people die for little reason. But war and mankind often do things with little reason.....

That said, I concur with Luke that it's a big gamble for Sharon and if he follows through (or is politically able to), it will be interesting to see what transpires. My opinion is to watch Egypt's reaction and influence in Gaza once Israel is gone.

Israel isn't going anywhere. A few settlements are being shut down. Gaza will still be under Israel military control.

From NPR. When Rabin was talking about closing down settlements, and stopping subsidising them, before he was assasinated, who was there at the forefront urging on the rabble. Yes, this is a rhetorical question.
