Any smart people here who can splain why my web site looks different in Google results depending on whether the search uses "www" or not?

Searching for "jimnewberry.com" gives this:

Searching for "www.jimnewberry.com" returns this:

I'd prefer the top results with the nice site index. My site uses Wordpress with Yoast SEO by the way.

Also I use Google Webmaster Tools; I had my site listed there as www.jimnewberry.com, and just today added same site without the www. I did that because--although my site was verified with Google--I couldn't choose my preferred domain (display URLs as www.jimnewberry.com or jimnewberry.com) and I found an article explaining that's a GWT bug which can be fixed by adding the same site without www and verifying it. That worked.

I don't know if Webmaster Tools is the issue or not; it seems weird that the same site can display results differently. I wonder if this could have to do with the SEO plugin or another WP plugin.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

One clue is that the website is not www.<whatever>. It is "http://<whatever>"

You should be able to work the rest out yourself.

Edit. Your second search is finding results only where www exists in the page. Your first search is finding the correct references to the page.

While you may consider the two domain names to be equivalent, Google search engine just sees them as two different words with different search results.

I think I see what you mean...if I enter www.etc into the URL window of my browser, it redirects to jn.com without the www. I think I can change that through my web host if that would be better. If there's some way to ensure that people will see the nice index via Google search I'd like to know what it is.

I have often seen people enter a URL into Google to get to it instead of just entering the URL into their browser address bar.

Another question: if you Google "chicago photographer" my site comes up on the first page, with the heading "Jim Newberry." But that's not the meta title tag at my web site, and it's not the title/heading of my Google+ business page (that hit has my URL jimnewberry.com but also links to my G+ page). Where is that "Jim Newberry" coming from?

I do not see the problem. I looked at the source code and found this line.

<title>Chicago photographer Jim Newberry</title>

What am I not understanding?
