Tshabalala was sleeping in his car after dropping off his 16-year-old son‚ Luyanda Themba Tshabalala‚ for evening classes on Tuesday. He was woken by knocking on the window and‚ thinking he was in danger‚ discharged his firearm.

Surely if it's so dangerous that someone knocking on your window warrants a lethal response then presumably you wouldn't wait there or go to sleep in your car?

I don't know the circumstances. The guy is a security guard so maybe he worked all night and was tired, and was waiting for his son. For sure, Joburg is a dangerous place.

Residents of Ennerdale south of Johannesburg say they are not a violent community and that the shocking case of a father who allegedly mistakenly killed his own son outside a school should be treated as an isolated occurrence.

Johannesburg has a crime problem, it's not as bad as most people make out. I would suspect the security guard might be a bit over-primed owing to his job. On the other hand, I know I wouldn't dare fall asleep in my car at night on the streets of Joburg. That is a rather risky proposition, even in a nice neighbourhood.
