Well not actually in the schools thought it seems to be linked to at least one of them, and caused several to go into lockdown.
Link. The first burst of gunfire erupted midday Monday, outside a North Etobicoke apartment building, prompting a wide-scale police ground search for armed suspects in an area near four schools.
Just two hours later, more bullets flew in full daylight, this time in a downtown Regent Park alleyway.
By the end of one Toronto’s deadliest days for homicides, three young men — including two high school students — and a man in his early 20s were dead, and eight Toronto schools were sent into either “hold and secure” or lockdown mode, the latter used only serious emergency situations.
One of the victims is a 15-year-old student from James Cardinal McGuigan, a Catholic high school near Finch Ave. West and Keele St., according to Maria Rizzo, a Toronto Catholic District School Board trustee.
The second victim was identified by family and friends as Zaid Yousif, a 17-year-old student at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School. One of Yousif’s cousins said he had just celebrated his 17th birthday over the weekend; a close friend said Yousif was an immigrant.
At lunch hour Tuesday, students at Don Bosco gathered inside to hold a prayer session. Outside, Toronto Catholic District School Board spokesman John Yan told reporters the school would not identify the students killed because police aren’t identifying them, in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Five grief counsellors have been at the school and will be there “as long as they are needed.”
