Come on, it's psuedo-science. Jerry Peterson makes lots and lots of claims, but rarely backs any of them up. The SCARS group is just a money-making scheme that promises little effort to make a person into an undefeatable fighting machine. I'd like to see Peterson get into a fight with Tito, Sak or Rickson.

I used to live in Phoenix and have dealth with a couple of SCARS groupies, they were hardly undefeatable... they weren't even good fighters. Anyone that has been taking in by the SCARS brainwashing should really reconsider what they are doing. It's a waste of time and money.

That anything like Hostile Control Systems by the same guy? I was given 2 videos years back by my instructor and asked to transfer to UK format. I couldn't believe them. "If you hit someone with your left hand then your right hand is naturally cocked to hit them next!" Why had nobody told me this before! "Your forearm is a natural pipe to hit them with". Please no more, too much enlightenment at once. And "traditional martial artists" queueing up to testify that they had never realised before that you could hit someone twice. Sheesh!
I told my instructor not to bother. Watch a John Wayne movie instead.

It's worse than that. They teach that every person will react exactly the same way to each strike. They also don't deal with the possibility (high possibility) that a person will actually defend themselves against a strike (parry, block or dodge). They preach that sparring is counterproductive, that bag work is counterproductive and that all martial arts are flawed.

They train in techniques "too deadly" for demonstration in a sport fight or sparring. They use much psuedoscientific jargon that they have trademarked. They charge a whole ton of money for each seminar.

It's all about making money.

The European martial arts as a whole tend to be a little less metaphysical. Of course like anything as complex, there are plenty of misconceptions going around, but the lack of chi-power hasn't affected the effectiveness or inpracticality of modern barehand martial arts. (There there's the modern martial arts as such, involving mere computers, explosive and error-correction and most decidedly surpassing the effectiveness and reliability of God's aid, chi and amulets.)

Not sure I'm following you there synaesthesia. By European martial arts do you mean SCARS?

Maybe he means such things as Fencing, Savate, Queensbury Boxing and the like.

I think so yes - also there are fewer of the woowoo groups active in Europe (certainly the UK). Don't forget catch-wrestling too!

Martial arts will always have someone cashing in on ignorance. I remember seeing a Choi-Kwang Do demonstartion once. This was the "new" art that was "modern self-defence" and I was dissappointed, if not unsurprised, to see that it is basically taekwondo...with better punching.

If you want real I suggest the works of Geoff Thompson - now there is a guy who has been there and done it!

Yes, and Progressive Fighting Systems, Straight Blast Gym(s), Lucay Lucay Kali, Inosanto Kali, Mark Mikita's Fightology, and any Gracie or Machado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school.

Each of those schools/systems is about what WORKS and individual effort, not about rote learning and chi power.

We have a supposed SCARS guy over on Bullshio who is one of the most irritating people you can imagaine. He's smug, stupid, arrogant, irrational and refuses to debate anyone. Then he claims we're harassing him by asking him to BACK UP HIS STATMENTS WITH FACTS.

I love PFS - I trained with the awesome Jack Mcvicker for a while.

I personally do not believe that ANY art that does not pressure test itself in some way can present itself as a combative system. I try not to debate too much because you cannot educate those who do not wish to be educated. If you don't train for full contact you will never be able to fight full contact.

(Don't forget the Dog Brothers too)

I think PFS has turned into a joke these days.. with Vunak pretty much selling intructorships to support his drug habits. I do know a couple people that earned and learned from Vunak before he got too deep into his addictions.

I think that Voo is pretty clean these days and has come through the other side of the tunnel that is addiction. He is quite frank about his past history. Have you read the "state of the union" interview on http://www.fighting.net

I find that the JKD community is paradoxically the most open and closed community at the same time. In-fighting seems to stop the art from growing and the "word" from spreading. Guess too many are concentrating on the finger!

Yea, when people want to argue about "what is real JKD", I tell them to shut up and train.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I just re-acquainted myself with one of my favourite websites;

http://www.realultimatepower.net

I think it is one of the funniest martial arts websites out there and says more about groups like SCARS than a direct critique could ever do!
