South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem said Tuesday that she will send up to 50 South Dakota National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, the Associated Press reported.

The troops' trip to the border, which could last 30 to 60 days, will be funded by a private donation, Noem said.

national guard is available for rent for political stunts.

I always kinda assumed (hoped) our dystopic hellworld would involve more robocops or terminators or something cool. This is just bleak.

I wonder how these 50 members of the South Dakota National Guard feel about being treated like low-cost mercenaries.

Depressingly, I’m pretty sure they are totally into it.

And not for the enviable reason that they get their asses out of South Dakota

Will this actually happen? Can she legally do this, and if so, how? And she won't name the donors? No way. It won't happen.

ETA:
She'd be sending troops to another state for one thing. Is that state's Governor gonna be just okay with this? Someone mentioned political theater above. Someone looking for votes probably.

From the link:
"This could set a dangerous precedent to allow anonymous political donors to call the governor and dispatch the Guard whenever they want," he said.

I know the Posse Comitatus Act limits using the military for domestic matters and the National Guard is a domestic force, but still it seems there is a similar issue here. I did find this, however:
The act has been applied to the National Guard when it is in federal service, to civilian employees of the Armed Forces, and to off-duty military personnel. The act probably only applies within the geographical confines of the United States, but supplemental provisions of 10 U.S.C. §§ 271-284 appear to apply worldwide.
It would seem to me that without an act of Congress, this deployment is out of line.

Funded by a private donor? And who accounts for this money? Can they be audited?

Noem has turned the S.D. National Guard into a modern version of the Hessian Mercnaries during the American Revolution.

Can other state's guard be sent to SD's borders to keep them in? Just the crazy ******* who voted for this nitwit.

This all smells like bull ****. All of it. Commenters in this thread would be well advised to try not to sound stupider than Newsweek*.

Yes, we should.

* Or AP news. Or Business Insider; or The Hill; or US News; or Jacksonville.com; or Military news; or USA Today; or Tampabay.com; or you get the point.

ETA: This is a dumb thing Noem says she's going to do, just as DeSantis said he was going to send cops, and the Arkansas gov Asa Whatshisface said he was going to do. What's dumb about commenters commenting on the dumb?

If the point is they're all jackasses blindly publishing the same AP blurb without any investigation of their own, then yes, I get the point quite clearly.

Think about this. Does anything about the OP's claim sound remotely plausible to you? Do you not have even a single skeptical question about what the AP is actually reporting on, or what the governor is actually talking about?

It's not ******** that Gov. Noem said this.

Whether or not she will actually do it, or is telling the truth, is unknown at this time. Seems like a relevant story even if she's lying.
