The title is enough to rock ya but to learn that there is actually a "safe daily dose" of rocket fuel as determined by the NAS?

Oh boy. Well, at least it gives the 'bottle feed' coalition new ammo against the 'breast feed' coalition....

Other studies of cow's milk -- including by Texas Tech and by the Food and Drug Administration -- have found perchlorate in cow's milk from 5 to 6 ppb. The levels vary depending on the cow's diet at different times of the year.

Perchlorate, a salt, can impair a person's ability to take up iodide, a form of iodine and the building block of thyroid hormones that control brain development. High levels of perchlorate in the body also may reduce the amount of iodide in breast milk.

Perchlorate=reduced iodide = poor brain development.

That might explain a few things.....

Rich Hood, director of the EPA's national press office in Washington, D.C. , said, "We're not going to be able to comment on the Texas Tech study. The EPA scientists and researchers are looking at the study. They want to determine what our appropriate response ought to be.''

In Sacramento, Allan Hirsch, a spokesman for the state EPA, said, "We need to sit down and look at it.''

Oh, good call.

Ok, ye noble court jesters of the JREF...your turn! :D

I'm not sure what thought disturbs me most. Rocket fuel in milk or milk in rocket fuel....I suppose it would depend if you are at a milkbar or a launch pad.

This is yet another news article that really pisses me off.

1. It's quite a jump to go from saying, "Perchlorate is a component of rocket fuel", to saying "We found rocket fuel in breast milk". Guess what, potassium ions are a component of rocket fuel. Did you know that bananas are loaded with rocket fuel?!?!

2. ppb!? Parts per billion?!? What is the detection limit of their instrument?? We are talking micrograms per liter. Even in analytical chemistry terms, that's concidered trace amounts. Ok, so yesterday I had one penny, and today I have 10 pennies. That makes me 10 times richer than I was the day before. Should I dance a jig? I would challenge the technicians to check their standards and measure again.

3. Where is the perchlorate coming from? Yes, it's a component found in rocket fuel, but I'm sure it's used in other things, perhaps fertilizer? How much idodine is typically in the human body? How much perchorate does it take to sequestor the iodine. These are the kinds of things a journalist should be investigating, not misleading the public into thinking that somehow people and cows are being fed rocket fuel. #$@@!@ media!!

Yeah, they'll be going balistic over this.

And of course Rocket Fuel as in the famous cocktail that boosts you into orbit: mix 50% cognac and 50% champagne.

Come on, what are you talking about...what would a finn know about alcohol? ;)

Maybe it's a secret plot by the liberal to solve part of the greenhouse gas problem and undermine the beef industry at the same time.

"Cows are a commodity. Let's fed them rocket fuel and blast them into space!"
