Breaking News: Ex-Bush press secretary Tony Snow dies

Former White House press secretary Tony Snow has died at the age of 53 after a second battle with cancer. Snow, who had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for a recurrence of the disease, left his White House job September. 14, 2007, and joined CNN as a conservative commentator.

Wait, this is scary. At the exact time I read the thread title, the Today show came on with the story! That's proof of something.

Here's a sign of the times. Tony Snow and Michael DeBakey die. Who gets top press? The guy who saved millions of lives with his medical inventions and procedures, or the guy about whom I shall say nothing out of respect for the dead? The answer is obvious.

I wouldn't say obsessed, but DeBakey didn't step into the cameras' light on a weekly basis for quite some time, or did he? I for one don't know him. Would 2nd place be enough for him and you to be content though? Because that's what he seemed to got there. Did he die today, or yesterday, when he might have gotten more coverage and a big front page picture like Snow today?

I can't think of anything to write, that wouldn't be disrespectful of the dead.

Its not a pleasant way to go, and fairly young. His family has my sympathy.

DeBakey will be remembered long after Snow's tombstone has worn down to be unreadable. Snow was of no redeeming value to society. Unfortunately, these are the kind of people our society is obsessed with. As I said, a sign of the times.

Style over substance. Celebrity over value. Judge Judy is much better known than Justice Roberts.

Although in this case the press bias also comes in. Reporters are much more likely to have known Snow than DeBakey. Editors, reporters, etc. always get bigger obits because the press likes to think they are important.

Of course DeBakey contributed more to society. He made open heart surgery possible. That alone touched 100's of thousands of lives.

The thing here is the fact that Snow was only 53. That's too young. DeBakey was 99. That's a good long life. Death was no surprise.

The painter pretty much nailed it for me. All things being equal, Snow's death would still get more attention than DeBakey's death. But DeBakey was almost 100 years old, and he died of natural causes. Most people wouldn't consider Snow's age of death ancient, and he died from the scary disease of our day.

I really don't care, because I didn't know him personally. I'm wondering how much the media will obsess over this, so close to Tim Russert dying, instead of doing journalism.

What's this 'respect for the dead' nonsense? I didn't respect him while he was alive.

This just in - the 24 hour news networks will have something to talk about for a couple of days. Then, hopefully, we'll all forget this guy ever existed outside of history books. Whoopty doo.

I disagreed with Mr Snow on matters of politics, but he was very talented and he seemed like a gentleman.

Dr DeBakey was a great man.

Politics... the last frontier of woo for skeptics. Tony's crime? Yeah, he was not ideologically pure. Sorry Tony. You should have been a doctor, developed a life saving procedure, invented a new drug or have been a Democrat.

Best name ever for a White House press secretary... (runner-up globally to Napoleon's charge d'affaires, Philippe de Spinneur, and Caesar's proconsul, Biggus FatLiarus).
