The mind boggles.
Rick Santorum said:
“Everything I’ve read shows that we would not have gotten this information as to who this man was if it had not been gotten information from people who were subject to enhanced interrogation,” Santorum said, referring to the courier that led Americans to Osama bin Laden. “And so this idea that we didn’t ask that question while Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was being waterboarded, he [John McCain]doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works. I mean, you break somebody, and after they’re broken, they become cooperative.”

Torture victim John McCain doesn't understand how torture works, says former senator Rick Santorum Link NSFW!

That has to be one of the finest examples of *facepalm* I've ever seen. Just wow.

This reminds me of a story, retold in McCain's Wikipedia page, of his first Congressional election. He hadn't lived in Arizona for long, so one of his competitors accused him of carpet-bagging. Here's McCain's response:

Listen, pal. I spent 22 years in the Navy. My father was in the Navy. My grandfather was in the Navy. We in the military service tend to move a lot. We have to live in all parts of the country, all parts of the world. I wish I could have had the luxury, like you, of growing up and living and spending my entire life in a nice place like the First District of Arizona, but I was doing other things. As a matter of fact, when I think about it now, the place I lived longest in my life was Hanoi.

The McCain of those golden days . . . how I miss him. Sure would have been nice if that guy had gotten the GOP nomination. Ever.

Damn, can't find the link. Yesterday, when this first broke, someone from Huffpo contacted the McCain people asking for comments on Santorum's gaff and received this response:

"Who?"

It's the little moments like these that make McCain my favorite Republican. Seriously, I hope he lives forever.

Is Sick Rick out to prove that his party has descended into utter lunacy?

I hope he does get the nomination for POTUS now.

This blather is sure to totally activate an enormous voting block, one on which the Republicons have always depended, to come out and vote for anybody but this nattering drongo.

Old soldiers do not like little wussie boys telling them what is good military procedure.

What's going on here.. lefties taking up for John McCain?

Oh, that's right, the election has been over for some time. I forgot. Carry on.

How is it hypocritical to dislike McCain as a candidate but acknowledge he understands how torture works?

Oh, that's right, you are just trying to stir things up. I forgot. Carry on.

Waterbording victim John McCain, who says it's torture, doesn't know what he's talking about.

Well, if they didn't know who he was, they could have googled him.

Does it occur to the OP that raising stupid perpetuates it when posted on the internet?

STOP Aiding and Abetting Stupid, ya hear?

Don't make me come down there!

No, we still think he's a crazy old coot, but, like a stopped clock, he called this oner right. Certainly he has more knowledge of what can and cannot be achieved by torturing people than does the religous whacktard wussie boy with a law degree and limited life experience.

Maybe Sick Rick should have spent some time doing public defense duty to get an idea of what happens when the cops get too rambunctious with somebody they really want to put away for something. Maybe the stupid sack of slop should look at the number of people on Death Row in Illinois who were really intensely grilled by the police until they confessed and were then released on DNA evidence.

We are just not going to sit here and watch while a little snot like Sick Rick runs off at the mouth about crap that is way over his head. The little snot wants to be POTUS and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

He better show that he has at least more understanding of what that entails than has some useless drongo like, shall we say Rummy or the Shrub?

Because, you know, everyone holds their opinions in stark black-and-white.

Oh, wait. No, they don't.

Just because I thought Obama was the better candidate (especially after the way McCain handled himself during the election) doesn't mean I don't respect what McCain was and did before that. Don't be so lock-step partisan.

Was McCain waterboarded? Certainly, he was tortured, but I don't believe the North Vietnamese used waterboarding - caring not at all that their techniques left evidence. In fact, so far as I can tell, waterboarding during the Vietnam War seems to have been confined to use by the US and it's allies on North Vietnamese.

I believe that waterboarding is torture. The US Goverment has prosecuted people for waterboarding people. There are some fairly prominent victims of torture, at least equal to McCain, that do not believe waterboarding is torture. COL Bud Day (Medal of Honor for actions as a prisoner of the Vietnamese), Colonel Leo Thorsness (also awarded the CMH for the same reason) not only doesn't believe waterboarding is torture, he encourages its use. Admiral Jeremiah Denton, famous for spelling T-O-R-T-U-R-E in morse code with his eyes while fiming a propoganda piece for the NVA, favors the use of waterboarding.

I don't know Rick Santorum from Adam. I know that if I were interested in running for public office, I would avoid saying really stupid stuff - and saying that John McCain doesn't know what torture is is really stupid stuff.
