Texas Gov. Rick Perry: Americans have no right to freedom from religion

It must be awfully damn hard to be a Christian in today's America. I salute the proud and courageous Texas governor for sticking to his principles and standing up for freedom OF religion.

I'm curious though, since atheists don't have an inalienable right to be free from religion if I refuse to choose a god to worship will the state assign me one?

The GOP, working hard to make America a Christian nation (AKA theocracy).

I suspect he meant that we can't be told we can't celebrate our religion. Or maybe we don't have freedom from other people's religions. Either way he's not a bright man.

Meh. He passed a bill that says it's not illegal to say "Merry Christmas". So anyone who wants to fight the man can respond with "Happy Festivus" or "Blessed Winter Equinox" or whatever.

It's like signing a bill that allows you to say the pledge of allegiance.

RP probably thinks that "freedom from religion" would mean that atheists would have the right to never be exposed to any religious sentiment whatsoever.

Maybe his trap is too effective? Reason gets in, but never escapes through his mouth?

Next you folks will tell me gay marriage doesn't mean I have to marry a guy. Sorry but I'm a guy. I can't get gay married without marrying a guy. Checkmate.

Perry isn't the only smart one.

Sounds like he's advancing a policy proposal based on the argument that the government agencies may engage in religious expression without running afoul of the establishment clause.

That's like a policy proposal based on the argument that government agencies may restrict the freedom to peaceably assemble without running afoul of the free assembly clause.

No surprise, the least tolerant religion, the one that cannot bear the mention of any other religion, is the one that claims not to be a religion at all.

I just use, "Happy Christmannukwaanzaturnalia." Works every time.

Yes, atheists simply can't bear to hear religion even spoken of. Which is clearly why they never discuss it on places like internet message boards.

atheism = not theism. Atheism is the proposition that there are no gods. Religion (AKA theism) is the proposition that there are.

Brainster, that's called a canard. A red herring. Even if it were true it would be OT.

You congratulated me for stepping up and admitting my mistake with the Koch bros video. Could you do a guy return favor?

While I actually agree in general with your point, I have to ask what you're responding to in this thread.

Or is this one of those kneejerk "must attack people who are criticizing a Republican" impulses?

The law in question:

Sec.A29.920. WINTER CELEBRATIONS. (a) A school district
may educate students about the history of traditional winter celebrations, and allow students and district staff to offer traditional greetings regarding the celebrations, including:

(1) "Merry Christmas";
(2) "Happy Hanukkah"; and
(3) "happy holidays."
(b) Except as provided by Subsection (c), a school district may display on school property scenes or symbols associated with traditional winter celebrations, including a menorah or a Christmas image such as a nativity scene or Christmas tree, if the display includes a scene or symbol of:
(1) more than one religion; or
(2) one religion and at least one secular scene or
symbol.
(c). display relating to a traditional winter celebration
may not include a message that encourages adherence to a particular religious belief.

The law is silly and unconstitutional as it clearly enumerates what the acceptable "established" religions are.
