BBC News: US woman shoots boyfriend in YouTube stunt

"A Minnesota woman has been charged over the fatal shooting of her boyfriend, in what authorities say was a social media stunt gone wrong.

Monalisa Perez, 19, was booked into county jail after shooting at Pedro Ruiz as he held a book to his chest, believing it would stop the bullet.

The couple's three-year-old child and nearly 30 onlookers watched as she fired the fatal bullet into his chest.

Ruiz's aunt said they did it to increase their social media following."

Sadly not a candidate for the Darwin Award, is the shooter is already pregnant weith hers and the bullet recipient's second child.

You couldn't make this stuff up....

You'd think they'd at least try the stunt with another copy of the book and no one behind it first before they'd risk their lives for more social media followers. Or do the responsible thing and fake it. This is so stupid :(

People educated by movies and TV where physics is different make poor choices...

Yeah, it's like serving up a recipe you've never done before at a dinner party. But slightly more deadly, unless it's salmon mousse.

ETA: Should have said, maybe they only had one book....

"nearly 30 onlookers watched"

Nobody questioned the advisability of trusting a book to protect this guy? Unless they thought it was a trick I guess.

My thought too. Thirty ignorant and or morbid people.

Plain language Google search, "Will a 50 cal be stopped by a book?" And first result.

ETA: Albeit a rifle but the point stands that we have near the sum total of human knowledge on hand, and live access to experts.

Of all possible handguns they went with a Desert Eagle? Uh... yeah, a thick book could stop a small-caliber gun, but hardly a .50...

Had it been the complete, 24 volume, Encyclopedia Britannica, I still wouldn't have chanced it.

If it had been a Bible he would still be alive.

Disclaimer: To any stupid people with guns and Bilbles out there, this is a joke and not a sane course of action.
