Replace ipod with Android

I've continued to carry around an ipod with manual syncs to an itunes system for all sorts of reasons. But with some computer changes, I'm trying to move off it to an android phone.

podcasts aren't too bad. I like most of what AntennaPod does, so that's satisfactory.

On the music side, I'd like to find something that can do a function similar to smartplaylists on the ipod. Specifically, I'd like to be able to ask it to shuffle songs not played in the month.

I have MediaMonkey, and I love the features it seems to have for syncing (I can set up lists on Windows and push to android), but it doesn't seem to have smart playlists on the android side. BubbleUPNP I use for other purposes, but doesn't have smart playlists and searching songs is poor.

Any recommendations for a more featureful audio player? I don't see any way I can get my hard buttons I had on the ipod without some hardware hacking. But if I can get a better player, that might be enough.

Haven't used it but this app seems like an example of what you're looking for. I'm sure there are more that you can search for and try out in the Play Store.

ETA: And I don't know what specific hardware buttons you're looking for and what kind of headphones you use, but many have volume/track change controls.

Cool. I had tried PlayerPro earlier (along with Neutron and several others), but I didn't understand the smart playlist feature the first time. I thought there were just some pre-programmed ones that didn't match what I wanted.

From your suggestion, I tried it again and I finally noticed how to edit them. I see now that the one I want is possible. I've wasted most of my trial period now, but perhaps this is the one I want.

I'm glad it's working out. Fortunately, it's hard to go too wrong with a $4 purchase. ;)

I'm fortunate in that I never built a music collection, so I'm perfectly happy dropping $10/month on whichever music service I feel like (I usually change when someone comes along offering a free month or three). Google Play Music is my current favorite since one of their "radio" stations always hits whatever spot I need hit. :)

Almost. I will contact them and let them know that "music not played in the past <timeperiod>" does not select music that doesn't have a timestamp at all. :-( I think it's reasonable that this should behave differently. Maybe they'll consider changing it.

I've used Google Play for a long time (since they had unlimited free uploads), but I'm often in places where I either don't want to pay for data download, or at a place in Idaho where I have very minimal service. So having the stuff local is nice.
