How many ends of the world do I get to live through, anyway?

I should look it up.. I guess this one, there was Jan 1, 2000 and 2001. Then there's May 21, this year, and some time in October again this year. December 21, 2012.

I'm surely missing more.

I seen a few websites detailing end of the world prophecies in detail, and it makes me wonder how the religious can keep on believing it without feeling like complete idiots. Can someone help me understand it?

You'd think after the first fail prophecy they might get a little suspicious of such things.

I think it's something along the lines of "Well, we didn't have all the data yet", "This is just a prelude, the big one will be coming for sure, just a bit later on", "The guy who made the calculations was not a true believer, so his prediction doesn't count" and many others.
