Removing a Cell Phone Camera?

Some of the latest cell phones - such as the Motorola SLVR L7 - are appealling enough to entice me to dump my 3 yr old cell phone. However, it seems that the lastest crop of "cool" phones only are available with built-in cameras and - of course - my employer forbids camera phones.

I guess that I can crack open the phone and desolder/pry-out the camera and paint over the lens. But, that will certainly void the manufacturers warranty. Plus, I'm not certain what level of built-in test these new phones have - so possibly by removing the camera. I'm asking for problems.

Does anyone know if the "factory" (e.g., Motorola) or the cell phone provider (Verizon, Cingular, etc.) will remove the camera for a nominal or no fee - and not void the warranty?

You really oughta check with the provider/maker of the phone. Many camera phones come in non-camera versions, which is often special order. It's made for those who need to bring their phone in areas without a camera.

Of course, this only goes for phones that do useful stuff other than take pictures. If the camera were the primary feature of the phone, then it would be pointless.

Most phones are built on one board or in a single unit now, with all components attached more or less permanently. The cover is merely plastic wrapping to make it look attractive. This facilitates "repair", of course - just change the cover and SIM card to a new unit in seconds. So removing the phone would mean literally deconstructing a tightly-bound system almost completely - a disaster just waiting to happen!

All manufacturers have non-camera phones in their range, but they are rarer now, cost more (Why?! It's FEWER features, guys!), and usually have far fewer other options also. Poo.

Why does your employer forbid camera phones?
