The results of a forensic analysis showed that 31 Islamist militants who seized a school in Beslan last month and killed at least 330 people were drug addicts, a law enforcement official told Russian news agencies.

Blood tests showed high levels of heroin and morphine in most of the militants, who were killed when federal forces and angry parents stormed the school at the end of a three-day hostage drama.

interesting...of course this may be BS because unlike the American government the Russian government has been known to lie but it's interesting nonetheless.

May or may not be true. Back in the days of the Soviet Union, people would be arrested and put in psychiatric hospitals. The fact that they spoke out against the Soviet regime was "proof" they were insane.

This would be consistent. If you oppose the government, your mind is disordered.

On the other hand, the Assasins used drugs to convince their acolytes.
Perhaps the present leaders feel that some peoples faith could use a bit of a boost?

(Of course the Russians could be lying, but I don't know why... how much worse can they make these people look? "They killed children!" (Mutter), "And they were druggies!" (Booh, hiss, Noooo!))

Man those dirty commies were crazy. You're actually unpatriotic if you oppose the government. And you can't be commited for being unpatriotic. Yet.

So you plan the Beslan operation well in advance and hide weapons and explosives in the school. Then you send a team of druggies to carry out the operation.

Hmmmm. Might be true but there is an amber warning light flashing I think.

Yeah, well that clinches it. I was reserving judgement on whether these guys were being treated unfairly by the media. Now we find out that they're all drug addicts. The animals!

What we might be seeing here is a rare example of efficiency in Russia. It seems to me that they're using a bit of 'time and motion' by wrapping up the War on Terrar and the War on Drugs in the same bundle. Stayed tuned for this advertisement soon to be printed in Pravda:

Heroin Causes Mass Murders at Schools... MmmKay?

Weren't the militants who took over a theater also found to have high levels of opiates? Hmmm...

The American government always tells the truth!

It makes a lot of sense, if you want it to go real, real bad.

Drugs are far from an uncommon occurrence in that part of the world.

It also introduces a major element of unreliability and unpredictability into the operation which is undesirable.

I seem to remember that there were claims that the Russians planted bottles of brandy and vodka on the people who carried out the attack on the moscow theatre. This could be a more sophisticated version of the same approach.

I just feel that your average muslim terrorist is more of a salad and perrier sort of guy.:D

Oh, no, this is a misunderstanding. There is a reason why a lot of drugs come from the Afghan area: While alcohol is forbidden by the Koran, drugs such as opium is not.

Even if alcohol is banned by Islam, you can still find muslims who drink privately.
