'Re-building Iraq' Question

Why would "Saddams people" trash their own contry? They still gotta live there?

IF the US was overrun by a foriegn country I dont think I would run down to the local sewer treatment plant and burn it down. What for?

It's the latest fanatical insane muslim fad. You've heard of suicide bombers? Well, now there's the self-exploding country.

The idea was to detonate the entire country to martyr itself for the Islam cause. Unfortunately, only the infrastructure was really destroyed with only a handful of US soldiers killed.

Naturally we couldn't blame this on US bombing of Iraq, since all of the explosions inside the bombs were pre-programmed to only destroy buildings, etc, with military or Saddam-hiding applications.

According to this story http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...u=/ap/20031023/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_conference the U.S. is seeking nearly $36B to 're-build' Iraq.

What did we do to the infrastructure of Iraq during the war that requires that amount of money?
I'm skeptical about this. Did we actually do that amount of damage or was it Saddam's people?

I frankly don't care who did it.

Much of what we'll be rebuilding was destroyed in the first war, was allowed to fall into disrepair during the sanctions period, etc...

So what? The war isn't over until the nation is repaired.

Very little was damaged in the war, and much of the damage to the infractructure has already been repaired.

Most of the problems in Iraq can be traced to long term neglect (partly due to the sanctions, and partly due to the fact that Saddam was diverting resources that could have been used to keep the infrastructure intact in order to build new palaces). Plus, a small amount of damage has been caused by terrorist attacks and looting.

I wouldn't be surprised if most of the rebuilding money goes to Bush buddies like Halliburton and the like. From there, most of the cash then goes into "planning" and "administrative costs".

That must be why the sewerage is leaking on the outskirts of Baghdad.

In any case, it looks as though a substantial amount of the money will be going to US companies. So don't think of it as wasted taxpayer dollars, so much as creating job opportunites for Americans.

Hold on! Why do we have to pave the streets with gold. Iraq was doing Ok before Gulf War 2. I say we put them back to where they were prior to February. I figure labour must be cheap, all these guys looking for work and all. What do we need to fix, a couple bridges? A few govt buildings. Why is it that when I turn on the news they show a new school. DID WE BOMB ANY SCHOOLS???

The rebuilding isn't about what we HAVE to do, it's about what we SHOULD do (and that goes for the whole world contributing, not just the US). Iraq was not doing OK before GW2, it was in shambles, the world was largely ignorant of this because the press was always managed by handlers. We SHOULD fix their basic infrastructure: water, sanitation, and electricity are the three biggest ones that need a lot of work. Schools get the press because it's a people story: the turnaround time is quick, you can show smiling kids in photo ops, and journalists don't like to cover sewage treatment plants coming online or adding more capacity.

Now, as to why we should: one reason is because we want Iraq to become an ally. For purely selfish reasons, we can use an ally in the region, and the best way to create an ally is to help them get back on their feet. Another is because we want people outside the US to believe in our ideals, a lot of people have their panties in a bunch that we invaded without UN approval, but it'll be hard to keep arguing that ten years from now if Iraq is prospering. And lastly, because it's the right thing to do. On this point it's hard to convince someone who doesn't already believe this, but nonetheless, it is a reason.

Or never worked in the first place...?

So what? The war isn't over until the nation is repaired.

Actually, it's not over until it's working better than any other Middle Eastern country. How else are we going to (surreptitiously) say, "look what being like the US can do for you"?

Does anyone know if it has started yet? Or if there even IS a reconstruction of Kosovo?
Just wondering...

Dubyah better act fast on any plans of rebuilding Iraq, because on the ground it is reminding me of the lyrics of an old song from Queen.

Another one bites the dust, another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone,
another one bites the dust
Hey I'm gonna get you too, another one bites the dust.

As far as I know, the UN is still the supreme authority there. Perhaps one day the UN will give them their independence, after they prove they are capable of handling it.

I wonder what odds I can get in Vegas on which country, Iraq or Kosovo, is sovereign first.
