The pseudo-religious cult has reached it's current peak:

Ratzinger's old Golf Volkswagen just sold for EUR 188.938,88 on eBay.

Guess who won the auction: Golden Palace Casino :(

While quite funny on the one hand, and I feel happy for the young guy who sold the car, this is a further stab into the backs of all sane people. It worries what seeing what level the cult around those pseudo-religious items is reaching.

According to a German news magazine it is even doubtful that Ratzinger ever drove that car, but (eventually) was nothing but the owner.

I'll bet anything this is a hoax. Wouldn't a cardinal have a driver--and have something fancier than a Golf?

Anyway, religion has nothing to do with it; celebrity does.

IIRC he used the Golf when he wanted to drive (or be driven, more precisely) "incognito". And, yes, he had a driver, since (again, IIRC) he didn´t even have a driver´s license.

I don't think it's a hoax, I don't doubt Ratzinger was the owner of the car, but just like you I doubt he has actually been driving it. So in a way, it's fishy.

You are right about the celebrity thing, though I'd say it's 50:50 celebrity:religion, or better said, hysteria (which lately seems hard to distinguish, considering the hype around the former pope's death, the "election" etc.)

@Chaos: What do you mean by "IIRC"?? Tell us more about your clerical past :D :D

That´s "if I recall correctly", you Bavarian/barbarian :)! Nothing to do with "Roman Catholic". Although I am, technically, still a member of that club, since I´m too lazy to write them a letter saying I quit.

I just read about the Ratzinger Golf and the story surrounding it here and there recently.

I know what "IIRC" means, I was kidding you because it sounded like you were trying to remember the time back when you were his driver ;) Btw, writing a letter doesn't help in canceling your church membership (um, and taxes), you need to go to your local civil registry office.

Just found a new article (in German):

Ha ha, the Pope's brother says that Benedikt XVI. was displeased with the auction when he told him about it, and never drove the car himself since he doesn't have a driver's license. Your memory did not fail you, Chaos.

So it's the front (or back?) passenger's seat they will have to worship, because Ratzinger was in the car a few times being driven around by his secretary.

Just how stupid can people be...
