• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Randi blocked in China?

Oh--I was going to suggest reducing the MSG, but I obviously misunderstood the thread title.
:o

Using Stumble, I found this website:
http://www.greatfirewallofchina.org/test/

It supposedly lets you test a website to see if access to it is blocked from China. Of course, the first website I tested was www.randi.org and to my surprise it claims to be blocked!

Thanks for posting Keerax. I detest censorship and it makes me angry that executives who run American corporations like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft and who enjoy all the benefits from living in a democracy and being able to start and run a business in a democracy are actively cooperating with the Chinese government to help create a real world version of Orwell's 1984.

Skeptic.com is available.

So is SkepticReport.com

I don't know why randi.org was singled out from these skeptical web sites. Perhaps its because we occasionally talk about Chinese politics (including censorship) and culture in the forums and perhaps the other web sites you have tested do not?

We have also have had more threads about China since Wolfman, a Canadian living in China, has joined the forum. I just noticed that he hasn't posted since March 22. Coincidence or a result of the URL blocking? I've no doubt that Wolfman is savvy enough to get around the technology, but given his circumstances there he may not want to do so publicly.

I'll send him a PM and see if he has any comments.

wollery is in China - he can post.

Wolfman lives and works in China. He seems to be able to post okay. You man want to PM for an answer

Good point, and I noticed that he just posted today. So either the web site: greatfirewallofchina.org is full of it or Wollery doesn't have a problem with obviously using technology to get around China's URL blocking even though he's probably using a Chinese visa. Perhaps he'll want to comment on this thread? I'll PM him.

Bullshido.net is blocked, but Bullshido.com (our new fraud-busting, consumer protection site) isn't.

I guess the Chinese take their Martial Arts and their Chi seriously.

Heh.

Seriously, I just tried doing a search (using www.dogpile.com) to see what the Chinese government's position is on chi or qi and couldn't find anything.

Maybe the Chinese government just doesn't like sites with forums?

Anyway, I've not heard from either Wolfman or Wollery and they obviously have not posted in this thread either. Wolfman last post is still March 22, but Wollery has been posting at the JREF this week. Of course, in a way, that's a response in and of itself to the OP.

Except … per www.greatfirewallofchina.org/about says:

We’ve opened a website in China and route your URL request on greatfirewallofchina.org through to our server in China. The server in China opens the URL and the result is send back. Our testing is only based on one server on one location in China. We have different backup servers in different locations in China might one go down.
Other locations and other servers may give you different access to the various websites.

which, if I understand this correctly, is saying just because a domain name is blocked in one area of China doesn't mean that its blocked in another area of China.

This site is nonsense.

Wollery, Roborama, Wolfman (and myself every week or two) all access JREF from China.

I checked a few well known sites....

Google - your URL is unavailable
CNN - your site is available (but on the history at the bottom of the page it shows it as not available five times in the past three hours).
ebay - your url is unavailable
wal-martchina.com (the offical site, in China) - your url is unavailable
China Daily - your url is unavailable
five minutes later....
China Daily - your site is available

This last one is a Chinese newspaper published under gov't approval.
