So,

It is now official! Dragon*Con 2008 has a COMPLETE Skeptic Track of its own. We just had our staff meeting last night, and recieved our room assignments and such. For reference, they 'broke up' the Podcasting Track so we now have Podcasting AND Skeptic track. On paper, I am the Director of Skeptic events, and Swoopy is the director for Podcasting events. They gave us a LARGE room for all of our tracks. It is actually three 'large' meeting rooms that we can easily move the walls around in to make and combination of space/number of rooms. So, if we need to do a BIG event, we can make a room that can hold over 1,000 people. Or, two equal size 500 person or so rooms. Right near us is the Space and Science tracks, and across the hall is the Robotics and EFF track rooms.

Another cool part is that we are on the Second floor, so no requirement to fight for an elevator.

If you want to join in on the planning and such, come help out at:

Come and pitch in fun ideas for events and/or panels. :D

I'm not sure I'll be attending D*C, this year. I'll need a better excuse than a Skeptic track. I'm getting plenty of Skeptic stuff, this year, at the TAMs and on the Galaps cruise.
And I will be attending the smaller, but closer, I-Con 27 for all my fantasy needs.

Maybe if they had real dragons, at Dragon*Con, this year, I would be more inclined go.

Wow that is a tall order...

Let me consult with the Draco-Overload commitee to see if they will allow any of thier group to come.

So the No Wowbaggers ProAm Invitiational Poker Tourney and Full-Contact Candy Land Pornorama can spill over from TAM 6 to Dragon*Con?

I'll buy extra Minites and chest wax :)

How wedded are you to any particular definition of dragon?
Considering that it is supposed to be their convention, I will let them decide for themselves how to define themselves.

But, I am hoping for some of the ones they keep advertising in their marketing material!

Can anyone else help me generate some excuses to attend D*C?

I already know it's an excellent convention. I've been there twice, and will probably return in a year or two, if not this year.

The reasons I am not inclined to attend this year are as follows:

* Lots of other trips I am going on, this year, including but not limited to: 2 TAMs (one already done), the Galaps Cruise (which is a couple of weeks before D*C), I-Con, perhaps a software developer's conference or two, etc.

I already postponed my European trip to 2009 (but, that's mostly the Galaps' fault).

* Diminishing Returns: Yes, D*C is excellent, but unless there is something totally fresh and worth while, it will just be the same 'ol excellence as the last two years. And, I-Con should be sufficient for my fantasy fix, this year, anyway.

* Lots of other things I gotta get done! I have a few personal projects that keep getting dragged out: web sites, films, books, etc. My full time job already removes good chunks of time from this stuff. I think it would be wise to choose my traveling times as wisely as possible.

Having said that, I could change my mind, and perhaps attend for a couple of days, if not the whole thing, if I deem there is a good reason for me to do so! So, have at ye! Convince me to attend!

Mitch, all joking about parthenogenetic reptiles aside, with all the stuff you have on your plate this year, unless you've got a definate hook up at D*C, I'd pass.

Well,

One thing that HAS definitely changed is now D*C has an ENTIRE track of programming just for Skeptics. We have a bunch of the big names coming, even James Randi. Our Skeptic Track Event Room is put right beside the Robotics, EFF, Space, and Science rooms. So we won't be surrounded by the other woo type tracks this time. Best of all... the Marriott is finally done with their remodels, so we will have access to the food court again! :D

Lots of cool changes this year for the skeptic types. :)
